GPS on PDA !!!!

I know there are some sad gits out there that may have this answer.

Is there any software that is designed to work on PDA's as a marine chartplotter.
I've just got the xdaII working with a BT GPS receiver and TT navigator so, as a sado, I'd like to try it at sea for the hell of it .

Anyone any Info

Paul

I haven't used any, but from a quick Google it looks like there are a few around.

How long do you reckon your XDA would survive on a RIB?

John

PS Just ditched my XDA in favour of a P900 . . .

Enter sad git !

Maptech marine do one that works with their chart packs I hear it is very good but have never used it myself.

Have been meaning to download the trial for a while but never got round to it.

http://www.memory-map.co.uk/maptech_marine_software.htm

Otterbox do a good waterproof housing for pocket pc's which still lets you use the touch screen - aqua pac also do a pda version.

I vaguely remember Geoff who runs boatlaunch noting that he used his pocket pc on board may be he can give more info.

I have a garmin 12 which I can connect to my Ipaq running pocket PC - I haven't used the marine charts YET but the OS maps from memory map are brilliant!

The marine charts for the UK are proper hydrographic ones so are better than most of the other electronic charts that warn "do not use for navigation"!!!!

http://www.memory-map.co.uk/world_marine_charts.htm

http://www.memory-map.co.uk/acatalog/maps_uk_atsea.html

They have a link on the site to download screen shots - they are brilliant. Much better than the Garmin bluecharts in appearance.

As to how long this setup would last it is very easy to buy a waterproof jacket for the ipaq - the gps12 doesn't need one.

Thanks guys

I have and use memory map charts (solent area on the PC with the bundled offshore navigator lite. this software doesn't come with a pocket version but I'll look again to see if they have an alterative.

I agree there maps are clear and the best I've come across (which isn't much).

Paul

codprown - what software do you use for your O|S maps ??

memory map 2004 os edition - it is amazing - you can even have aerial photo overlays so you can actually "see" yourself driving around a roundabout or through an industrial estate! Tom Tom is better for driving but I also do a lot of climbind/walking and drive my Land Rover to some silly places.

I've got a Toshiba e755 running Pocket PC 2002. The great thing about the Tosh is that you can get a "rugged" case which is water and shock proof. I shall be testing the waterproofness of it soon.........

Thanks guys,

downloaded the trial version and used it with my existing memory Maps.
Tried it out today on my XDA and worked a treat.

Heres a couple of pics from the data stored on the trip.
One of the route back stored on the XDA and then syced with the PC
the other shows some data of max speed and avg time etc

No problem at all
