The best-no, value for money-not even close.

Have a look at the gitup git2, I use this all the time on boat. Smaller, lighter, has colour screen and gyro stability all for 80 quid if you shop about. I barely ever use my hero black now.

If you want proper 4k then I'd get the yiaomi 2. About a 3rd less than the gopro equivalent.

Gopro are close to going under, their new drone is a dud and the other action cameras have the same sensors in them.

I have a hero 3 black, hero 4 white (terrible thing) and a hero 2 from back in the day, trust me, the git2 p1sses all over them.

If the choice is a used gopro or a new git for same money that is a complete no brainer. Don't think because it says gopro it is better, it simply isn't anymore.

I have a few action cameras so if need more info I'll try to help.

Just make sure to look at all options before you buy, plenty of comparison videos on YouTube which are pretty helpful

I own and have owned plenty of GoPro's, I also own Garmin virbs which are a little better in terms of image quality in my opinion. Within the comercial filming industry GoPro still has the edge for popularity, not many news crews don't have a case with a bunch of them with all the different attachments.

The competition is fierce with these style of cameras, things like 4K are useless without the computer power to edit and run such memory hungry footage so be aware of this before purchasing any make.

be careful on ebay, there are a LOT of sjcam clones about.

if you goto the support forums you can find out if it is genuine or not.

nearly every model of the SJCAM has been cloned

some info here- http://pevly.com/sjcam-sj-scam-diffe...l-fake-camera/

http://electronics.cestmoi.ca/hello-word/

if you do get a git2 no one has copied it yet as it uses a diff battery/case from a gopro, but still very easy to get bits for.

I use a Denver (forget name/model) very good vid quality. Comes with a full range of mounts and straps all for £45 a year ago. No screen but I like that I can mount it on the boat rail and connect my mobile via wi-fi and control it without leaving the helm to start/stop recording or take stills.
This was taken with the Denver:

Have any of you guys looked at the "sunglass camera" style options? Would be for the eldest rather than me - and probably more biking and kayaking then on the boat...

Yes buddy, obviously the quality isn't as good but to be expected really. Got anything in particular in mind? I don't have them myself but a friend does who is also into gadgets.

Check out a mobius camera as key fob size and get a waterproof case for them if want something in between, great results from it and quite cheap.

Have a look at these reviews for action cameras
https://youtu.be/X10JFBd94GM

I originally purchased a sjcam, however it was faulty when I got it and need software updates etc etc so it was a real PITA to get my money back. Went straight to johnlewis and purchased a GoPro hero 4 session that has been great this year and really impressed, can view and control from my iPhone

There is quite a good offer on the session with some accessories at the moment. I have a session (insurance replacement for my hero thanks to JL aftercare !!!) and it's pretty good.

Considering getting a konig camera as it has GPS and wil overlay route and speed to video which go pro won't do on current models
http://www.konigelectronic.com/en_us...ncam/550591576
But the 29 minute duration is awful I get almost 2 hours from my session!

I guess I was thinking Snapchat Spectacles (although I see still not widely available). But having done a bit more digging I'm not sure they are quite what he would want - the styling is not quite "him", and 10s vids are a great idea (especially if I have to watch them) but might be too short for a lot of "action" stuff.

I personaly think the biggest thing lacking with the GoPro is the user not the camera. My daughter has just started using a GoPro 3 and is putting together some fun short videos.

She's just using basic imovie on a Mac. I believe the GoPro free movie maker has more features which is free.

I use go pro studio and it's buggy and prone to crashing (for me at least) managed a few videos ok but nothing like that.

These were shot on my old hero (£99 basic GoPro )

This was shot on a session

All edited in GoPro studio

I always enjoy looking at the photos/ videos that you put up on ribnet. I have even shown them to my wife who as no interest in ribs. I notice that your daughter often wears a scarf around her head is that for sun protection?

Regards
