Fixed DSC Set

After everyone being so helpful in my thread for help with deciding which handheld DSC to buy, I'm now looking for a fixed DSC set. I was happy just leaving the fully functional Icom non DSC set in with the handheld always being available as well but my insurance company and my Dad have had a winge about it so I am going to replace it. (fit in addition most likely) I've used plenty of radio gear over the years, both marine and non marine and tend to not like the cheaper stuff, always preferring Icom, Standard horizon, Yaesu, Motorola etc. So I guess the question is anyone got any recent experience of buying or know any good deals? Budget would be £300 or a bit more if it's worthwhile.

for me I'd be going for the Icom M323 or the M423, both look like good kit and I like the Icom menu, easy to follow when you're on the wet stuff

you beat me to it Stuart

I am also looking for a fixed DSC VHF. I normally go for Icom, but I have just installed a Garmin chart plotter. Has any got any experience of a Garmin 100i or 200i as I like the idea they talk to each other and can track to location of 3 buddy boats via MMSI. Or can an Icom do similar, or if not, be easily linked to a Garmin plotter?

not sure about the 3 buddy boats bit, but can certainly be linked to your plotter to give you the DSC function

really? i've never even had an insurance company ask if I have a VHF never mind get into the detail of DSC or not. I've also know an 'insurance company' winge about anything which (presumably) means you are a slightly higher risk and thus larger premium. It is very unlikely that any premium reduction will cover the cost of upgrading during the lifetime of a VHF radio...

I'm guessing age may have something to do with it, plus if you list the electronic items separately that you wish to be covered then they do sometimes ask for spec, value etc, probably we will all be asked the same questions as the insurance companies look for any excuse to reduce their costs anyway, never mind the insurance, his dad wants him to upgrade so that's far more important, as we all know dads are always right

ICOM are about to announce their new fixed set at the boat show. It is NMEA 2000 and an AIS receiver. No prices yet (won't be cheap!). It seems to have all the usual bells and whistles - literally

Fitted a garmin 100 in October. I'm very pleased with it but it was difficult to get it to communicate with the 750s. Got there in the end.

Yes, small print apparently with the policy, no cover above 12 miles offshore ( I asked for 20 miles)without a DSC and an AUX engine. I'm good with it as it makes sense anyway.
