You should look at the garmin 451s as well, people only speak good of them. Very reasonably priced as well (they come with preloaded maps).

What are the main differences between the 451s and 556s?

Screen size?
I have just bought a Raymarine Dragonfly, that I am looking forward to playing with in a couple of weeks when the Pacific goes back on the water. Needs a card, which does bump the price up.

I have the Raymarine A68 with "Downvision" sonar - it's the dogs danglies as far as I'm concerned! Especially as my two young boys love the "near-video" quality of it to see the shopping trolleys on the bottom!

It does come with a basic chart, but if you buy the extra it does bump the price up.

Isn't the Elite 4x just a fish finder. To get GPS you'd need the Elite 4 without the X or M postfix, which are sonar only and map only respectively.

On our old club SIB (a 16' Humber with a mariner 40 on it), I got hold of a small sealed lead acid battery from a small electric buggy and sat it in a plastic food container. it just needed a small hole and grommet for the cable and made the battery secure but easily accessible. I bolted the box to a piece of wood we had mounted to a center bottle rack, which also held the gps unit. It lasted weeks between charges. That was a little lowrance unit too. Seemed pretty good once we figured out how to use it.
