I'm afraid I would go with Garmin equipment every time. Granted they may be a little more expensive than other makes but their back-up service well known and second to none as I am sure other posters will agree. I have Garmin h/h & fixed GPS, fishfinder & w/proof h/h vhf (which is a nice bit of kit with no knobs to have to twiddle in big gloves )

Despite having given you the contact for the Piranha - 1 agree with Ribald above - and would choose Garmin every time.

We looked extensively for Topaz at Humminbird, Navman, Eagle, Lowrance and others - but Garmin stood out from their advice and customer support / service, and the comments from other users.

Not easy is it mate!

Hi Alan, well that certainly looks like a usefull item, but I guess I'm really interested in finding out about what is on the bottom and what is moving about under the boat. We could have done with that on TOPAZ Graeme. It may have been even better than hanging Bill over the bow!

I've been looking at the Garmin manual (pdf) that Peter sent me, VERY interesting and it has whetted my apetite.

Piranha? Garmin? Piranha? Garmin? Piranha? Garmin? Piranha? Garmin? Piranha? Garmin? Piranha? Garmin? Piranha? Garmin? Piranha? Garmin?

Ohhhh my head hurts! Still half the fun is in looking. At least now I've found out that I CAN fit one to Quicksilver.

So far I've found the price of the Piranah4 Portable @ £159.00 from Compass. I'm now awaiting the price of the Garmin 100 Blue with battery pack.

Hi Pete

It looks like there is a portable Garmin 100 but not a portable 100 Blue. The differences are the screen colour and the 100 has a sounder depth of 200 feet whilst the 100 Blue has a depth of 1200 feet. I can't see Quicksilver ever being out in water of 1200 feet so it looks like the 100 Portable is a good option.

I've dropped the hint to The Boss () that 'Echo Sounders' (note: not Fish Finders, because she would think that was a 'toy') are about to become a legal requirement on all boats used at sea!

I don't think I can wait for Christmas.

I ORIGINALY WAS GOING TO MAKE MY OWN BUT I FOUND A SITE IN AMERICA CALLED AQUA VIEW. TAKEN BACK BY THE IDEA OF BEING ABLE TO LOOK UNDER THE SEA I HAD ONE OF MY MATES BRING ONE BACK WITH HIM. SO FAR I HAVE USED IT TO FISH WITH, LOOK UNDER THE BOAT FOR WEED,FIND LOST PARTS IN A MARINA, CHECK CONDITION OF PROPS, LOOK DOWN DRAINS, LOOK UP A CHIMNEY, AND MANY OTHER USES. IT COMES COMPLETE WITH SCREEN BATTERY CAMERA AND CARRY PACK ALL THIS UNDER £300 it is the best bit of kit on my rib!!.
Need any more info just ask.
