just had a look at my life jacket since i carry a couple of spare kill cords in my spares i going to use one of them fasten to my waist strap and poke the flare up inside the jacket cover that way it will deploy when the jacket fires off easy to pull out if needed prior to jacket inflation might not work for all but the lanyard serves two roles then

I guess that's about where I expected as some unique batteries cost as much as 50% of the original unit cost.

I found this Youtube of the EDF1 showing how the battery is removed...
