Yeh, I've been reading up how they work today, but I found a PDF instructions file for the p48 transducer today that says "Never connect to 50khz supply"

Ah. Well, so much for my guesswork.

Thanks for all your help guys. I've spoken to the techs at Raymarine and they've reassured me there will be damage only to the transducer and not the Module. I'm going to invest some money in purchasing another transducer of the right type. It seems the transducer that was supplied to mine was meant for the later A series and is only to be used on lower power and at 200khz only.

I'll see if I can source one locally, Port Solent Marine Superstore has a transom mounted P58, but not the P74 which I need.

Can anyone suggest a supplier locally (Hampshire)?

Thanks for the kind offer Pete. To be honest if I can't find one locally, I'll get one mail order (cheaper) the only thing that's putting me off buying mail order is that there are some far East Clones of Airmar transducers floating about out there that I want to avoid.

My Little cheap eagle read ok from .1m 200m+ bonded skimmer transducer in the sump no probs. :-) think on reading these threads I will stick to it and not replace it with a new one as they dont seem to work too well in the shallows. where most of the dangers are. !!!

There's a lot to be said about these low cost fish finders.

I had a little Navman greyscale type depth/fishfinder before this unit. It was faultless and was very accurate, now the property of a fellow RIBnetter.

Well, you've heard of 2 units with problems (one due to a wrong ducer being used.) How many have not had problems?

My Lowrance 200KHz unit works from 1 foot (don't remember seeing anything less than that - usually when I see that I'm frantically looking around for deeper water) to over 300. It's about, oh 4 years old.

Got the new transducer today from Amazon. All wrapped up in a Raymarine bag too. Will be fitting it the weekend and let you all know how I get on.

Just to close this thread off.

I've now had the opportunity to fully test the new transducer, I am pleased to say that everything works like a dream. I've never had a depth finder of this quality before, I'm even able to split the screen between the two frequencies. Works right up to 40 knots without loss of resolution.

I was able to lock the zoom on the sea bed and pick out individual fish and was able to see shoals of Mackerel swimming around underneath at mid depth. When I dropped my feathers over the side it picked out my lead, so I knew I was at the right depth and in to fish.
