I have had the pleasure of testing most if not all the kit that is on the markent. I have worked for both Icom and Standard Horizon and at this end of the market you can't really beat the GX-1500 in terms of spec, value for money, easy of use and all the other bits that make a good VHF a good VHF.

In real terms there is not alot betwwen the Icom M411 and the GX-1500 but you get all the extra bits you have to buy for the Icom FOC with the GX-1500. As I said previous you also get a dust cover that you can't get for the Icom hence better value for money.

I think the standard looks stronger built also and that's kinda important on a rib

my icom has just packed in after a year of use, until a couple of days ago it was great and simple to use, but now it transmits but does not recieve and is difficult to use

Well if it is only a year old you should be able to send it back under warranty

I've got an iCOM fixed and Standard horizon handheld. If I was to buy a new fixed unit it would be standard horizon. Don't get me wrong the iCOM is a really good radio (with good clarity and volume) but menu system could be a lot better and it's a bit clunky to use. I also like the NMEA bi-directional on the std horizon.

iCOM steams up ocassionaly but seems to clear itself. In terms of service, my mate has his iCOM set die after 2.5 years and it was replaced no hassle.

Been running navman 7100's here on 4 boats in Donegal.
The only thing that has ever gone wrong is salt build up around the volume knob.
Little bit of care stops any serious harm. North Star now doing 710 identical model,
but i was able to pick up a 7100 from norfork marine for good discount :-) as it is end of
line they are going cheap, and is still a good all round DSC radio.

Well kinda - mine gives sporadic trouble during comms with the CG..

Standard horizons seem to be over taking icom in the ease of use range! I've dealt with many radios in my times mainly icom's, but know i think i am gonna take a big step and go standard horizon as for what am doing they seem to be very equiped! One problem with standard horizons are they dont currently have the ability to work with Geckos, unless u contact gecko privatly, thats the only thing cause am looking for a coms sytem for my gecko, but currently have a icom ic-m71! I've seen many of these droped and lost in the past two years! expensive to replace, where as standard horizons are cheap to replace, one of my friends lost one coming alongside a stationary yacht in a Avon 3+m rib, 20hp yamah tiller steer!

Ah very glad these are cheap to replace..... feel free to let some one know which one of your mates lost the clubs VHF? before I buy its replacement ?

I would go for Standard Horizon.....based on my personal experiences of excellant customer service is something does go wrong with your bit of kit

So they do work with the Gecko!

Gecko and D S Developements make the "Adaptor Comm" work with both the Icom and the SH kit, its only a matter of changing the lead from the PTT box to the radio........Simples!

Its so easy even I can do it!
