Choice of VHF

hi,

any suggestions of what built in VHF to buy.it has to be around £150 because i am on a tight budget to get my rib kitted out.

I like my Icom 411. Think I paid about £130-140 but I forget the exact price.

We get on well with the navman 7100 and the new garmin 100i, benefit is that you don't need a flush mount kit as an extra. Icom is excellent but the flush mount kit is extra if you need it

The flush mount kit for an ICOM is really easy to make though.

And the garmin is even better for flush mounting, The flush mount kit for the navman is similar to the Icom and can be a b***ard to fit in most consoles where there is restricted room but the Garmin drops in the hole and has a screw (or bolt if you prefer) in each corner fitted from the outside and then a cover clipped over them.

Sadly I always want what I can't have. All money is spoken for. That and the kids got it me for xmas just gone.
Out of interest when selling a DSC radio, does the MMSI number go with it?

The MMSI will stay with the VHF until reset and would need sending off to clear the old MMSI number

To clarify, the MMSI 'belongs' to the vessel, not the radio. I'd advise getting it cleared before you sell it (unless it's going with the boat of course) to avoid any abuse of your MMSI.

Ok IMHO, only two brands to look at Icom or Standard Horizon.
Both give you 3 year warranty......why? good kit.

With the Standard kit you get the flush mouny kit FOC and a front dust cover.
With Icom you have to buy the kit and there are no dust covers.

Like for like the SH kit is better value for money. Also all SH range has NMEA in and out so with the right plotter you can display incoming DSC info on your plotter.

Both Icom and SH make radio as their primary business and have been doing it for many many years.

With all due respect you will find most people will vote for their own VHF as long as they have never had a problem with it.

I have had the pleasure of testing most if not all the kit that is on the markent. I have worked for both Icom and Standard Horizon and at this end of the market you can't really beat the GX-1500 in terms of spec, value for money, easy of use and all the other bits that make a good VHF a good VHF.

In real terms there is not alot betwwen the Icom M411 and the GX-1500 but you get all the extra bits you have to buy for the Icom FOC with the GX-1500. As I said previous you also get a dust cover that you can't get for the Icom hence better value for money.

Well it didn't give me any troubles

I have the Standard Horizon GX1500 now and find it a nice piece of kit to use and believe it's the same company as Yaesu, they made/make some good radio HAM stuff. I've never had any experiences with the Icom stuff, but believe it's as good as it gets.
