Chart plotter transducer

Hi everyone I fitted a new transducer on my rib over the weekend! The sounder works until we get on the plane but as soon as you get on the plane it stops working! I did notice it seemed to kick up a lot of spray so when I got back in I raised it a bit but I think it might still be too high!

What do guys think?

Also I filled in an old screw hole with some silicone I hope that's the done thing!

As far I know once you get up a bit of speed you will not be reading correct depth, only works at lower speeds..

Looks like it's mounted too low.

At speed, the water coming out from under the hull will be rising back up. Within that stream, you want the transducer about half-submerged (at the front of the transducer.) That means the centerline of the transducer will be even with the hull at the deepest. Usually a bit higher.

Luck;

jky

Oh, and posting a pic taken even with the bottom of the hull will be a lot more telling than shooting down on the transducer.

No. Works at all speeds provided it's installed correctly

Dig it out, it'll fail. You need Sikaflex 291i in there or epoxy.

I think you have mounted it too low - the bottom of the transducer should be more or less level or just below the bottom of the hull. I would have also mounted it further out inside the spay rail.
Mine certainly works on the plane. But it all depends on the individual boat. If all else fails mount it in the bilge near the pump on a bed of silkaflex.

Surely it can't ever be too low. It needs to be in the cleanest stream of water possible. The lower the better. What do the instructions say?

I just made a permanent mount for my Humminbird portable sounder. The installation instructions are similar to those posted. It seems to work fine from dead stop to my top speed which is about 21 knots, but omagawd for spray. I have to make some kind of deflector to get that under control. I'm sure it also produces some drag, but I don't know if it is measurable in speed loss.

Looks like you found out what I did.

I fitted mine as per instructions, got the Belaggio effect and it stopped working... because the drag on the transducer pulled it clean out the water!

Mine is now somewhere between about level with and 1/4" above the continuation of the bottom of the hull. Looses the plot occasionally in big waves, but the prop is usually breathing fresh air at the same time...

Take it off the back and fit in in the hull. it will always work then . mine does.

I had a shoot through hull transducer but when i upgraded the sounder it came with a skimmer like yours.
fitted it as instructions and it was crap. loosing signal and just rubbish at speed so removed it and fitted it in the well at the back.
ok I dont get correct water temp but the sounder works 100% even at speed.

epoxied to the hull in the sump. .
