Boat music

Is there a such a beast that isn't car stereo sized?
Ideally I would like something that is mounted within the console with a very small waterproof control unit. MP£ and radio would be ideal but MP3 would do.
I don't have room on the console front for a full sized stereo unit but could maybe squeeze something no larger than 4 x 4" or so.
Anybody seen anything like this or can recommend something along these lines?

Brilliant piece of kit .. sounds ace, has a self contained rechargeable battery that lasts well

Holds the iPod in the case too.. just done 3 weeks with it .. well impressed

I had found these but they seem a bit of a lash up. Is there such a thing as a custom made version that has a small remote control and ideally a radio?
In an ideal world I would be looking for something that mounts perm inside the console out of the way connected to two 4" speakers and have a small waterproof remote, even better if it can have a aerial and receive radio as well.
I actually bought a marine Sony cd tuner but ebayed it when I realised I had no space left to mount it in the console front

That said Ive seen dash mounted units that are water tight and accept ipods too

erm..... aside from the radio are you not describing pretty much exactly what I suggested above

Have you got enough room in the console to fit speakers where they'll be pointing towards you? Doubt you'll hear them otherwise.

I wanted to go down the same route as the Force 4 kit before they started selling it.I bought all the bits separately only to find there was no way of fitting speakers where I'd hear them while moving unless they threw the compass miles off so it's all sat in the loft

You could add one of these to an ipod-or buy an mp3 player with tuner to plug into the force 4 kit.

Yes on medium ribs a bit of a problem .. the last RIB I had, had speakers mounted close to the floor but as you say still quite difficult to hear, and in rough water the CD jumped constantly

They are good but you cant dock your Ipod with anything else when the radio attachment is fitted

I reckon the speakers are easy, they can go here........
I have been searching the net and would prefer something compact integrated, and hopefully with a radio.
My motor is quiet enough that I reckon even at full chat I will be able to hear OK but ist really for when stopped sunbathing.......

Oh yeah you'll hear something

but it wont be much of the music you are playing

In order of appearance it will be

1 .. Air rushing past your ears

2 .. Water splashing off your hull
3 .. your engine .. no matter how quiet it is

4 .. your music

I've just bought one of these for mine

Managed to squeeze a pair of 3" speakers on the dash and a pair of 6" mid range nearer the floor.

Not fitted yet so cant comment on sound quality

Even with a bit of careful soldering?

I've got a mini radio transmitter I plug into my mp3 player when I'm at work so I can tune the truck radio into it. Don't bother with them if you were thinking about it. They eat batteries and the transmission quality is only good enough when the transmitter is less than 2 feet from the tuner.

I guess I am just feeling spoiled at the moment, the quietness of the 4 stroke and the shelter of that large wide and high console.
Bit different to the old one seat jockey with the two smoke motor that you had to shout into someones ear to be heard when at full chat.
In comparison to that this boat feel positively luxurious.......

We........lll, the thought of acting the stereotypical non yachtie (in their minds) for a laugh did cross my mind,
Anchor beside some yachts and crank up the stereo and wave around a few bottles of wine sort of thing, you know how we are viewed in some quarters.........

The idea is that as the main unit and ipod are seperate to the controller, they can be mounted anywhere out the way, saving room on the dash. I'm going to fit an ipod permanently in an Index box as the ipod is linked via the usb so you get full ipod control on the dash and it recharges itself
