Battery needed, but which one

Id like to replace one of my batteries but cant seem to find the spec I need.

Its a Suzuki 175, but dispite looking at the website and calling one of the dealers I still cant get the correct spec.

I know its 12v and 120 Ah, but its the Cold Cranking Amps thats important. Or MCA (Marine Cranking Amps)

The two I do have are 650 and 750, but I would have thought Suzuki have a recommendation. I dont want to pay loads for a 900 MCA one when a 650 will do.

Its only to start the engine, so marketing terms like dual purpose and marine are not helpfull. Its a starter battery, not a battery to power your caravan off !

Anyone know a good dealer / website I can checkout ?

Thanks.

Comment from an auto electrical specialist of my acquaintance is just to fit the biggest cheapest lump of lead that you can squeeze into the available space. Works very well on Land Rovers - usual recommendation is to fit the diesel spec battery. 800 CCA but only 95ah. Starts a big V8 with ease. The 3.5 V8 spec is an 069 which is 70ah/680CCA.
If you can find someone/get one yourself a Halfords Trade card sees a huge reduction on their battery prices.
FWIW I use the 110 amp 'Leisure' batteries as starter & fishfinder power. No idea what the CCA figure is as they aren't marked on them. Never had an issue.

I did a bit more googling (instead of working) and found this website: Numax CXV35MF Deep Cycle 12 Volt 120Ah Dual Purpose Leisure, Marine Battery

Pretty comprehensive selection and I reckon £120 delivered is not a bad price. Or the ever so slightly less powerfull one for £85. Mmm, at that price I could buy two of them brand new

Also found this: http://www.dekabatteries.com/assets/...ionslayout.pdf

Which does list all the manufactures requirements. Not sure why the two Suzuki dealer I rang couldnt tell me though. One didnt understand what CCA (MCA) was.

Hi
If you are running two battery's from same charge source they must be to the same spec or you will bring the "larger" battery down to the spec of the "smaller" one, the only way to avoid this is to fit some fancy charging relays .

Its a twin engine set up, so each battery is for each seperate engine. So I think that should be OK.

Are your batteries not less than a year old? Shouldn't be done yet??
Surely they have at least a years warranty?

Yes, they are pretty new.

But when I decided to fill the boat with water* one of them got fully submerged. Since then does not seem to charge properly. On the charger is shows as Yellow all the time - meaning its not fully working.

It starts the engine fine, but Im concerned it will let me down just when I need it.

So for the cost of £100 ish Id be buying peace of mind.

I dont want to drive to the coast and find Im unable to start one engine. Or worse, find Im stuck in the Solent. I suppose I could use a set of jump leads - but I want the boat in 100% working order 100% of the time.

*I launched without the bungs*

They're different. CCA is the amount of current the battery can supply for 30 seconds, measured at (I think) 0 degrees F.

MCA (sometimes listed as CA) is the same test, measured at 32 degrees F.

MCA will always be higher.

Isnt it measured at Celcius ?

But yes, its the temp at cranking thats the difference between CCA and MCA.

Numax Batteries I use the smaller version on my Boat - 3 years still going strong.

I just bought second as back up, trying to work out best way to wire!

Switch , Diode thingy , FET switch or battery saver and just connect both together!

Doesn't really matter as long as we're talking about the same temps. But yes, it would be -18 (or something like that) and 0 degrees C.

On my phone here so can't see the box on the left that might tell me what your Suzes are, but as you have twins:

- are they small enough to pull start?
- Will the boat plane on one?

Or to phrase it differently are you worrying unduly?
