Hi Andy I use them all the time as I'm on a swing mooring. Do not buy the rulematic with the inbuilt float switch as it pulses every 5 mins till it gets resistance therefore is working all the time and makes a bigger demand on your battery over time. I always use the Rule 1100 with a separate float switch which only activates when the water reaches your predetermined height. I like Rule but other will say Johston or Whale it's up to personal preference. Better put in a second battery if you don't already with a reg switch do you will always have power to start.
Cheers hope this helps

I've got a Johnson combi unit going on the 7.8-the Johnson pumps have replaceable motor cartridges, changeable outlet fittings and a lug to fit an auto switch on them.

Can't comment on how good it is though as it hasn't been used yet.

At the risk of being contraversal, I don't see the point of a bilge pump unless you have a bilge, or don't have an elephants trunk.

I have a bilge pump and an elephants turn and never need to use the pump - am I missing something?

Do you use a swing mooring or do you dry stack or trailer?
it makes a diffence if your on a swing mooring and you can get to your boat every weekend

I suspect Hadd's Ribcraft will have a " bilge " at the back

My 585 lives on a trailer most of the time , but I like my Rule 1100 auto pump.
She's never on a mooring unattended for more than 24hours , and that won't harm a healthy battery .

If the boat lives on the water, fair doos. Other than that, I'd not bother on a rib. Unless you have a decent well, they're sat there prime time ready for a kicking by kids and other non-paying guests.
I don't have a bilge pump on 'Hey Joe' and rarely miss it.

Got a pair of the new Whale autos on mine Andy, but not sure up if I prefer them over the Rule type...don't seem to pull the last bit of water out as well.Although the R.C guys reckon they're less problamatic..time will tell.
The Deep Bilges do a good job though.. Pluss, they're handy for keeping a few Mackerel fresh too!

Ive got a Rule with separate float switch but been on boat today and switch not working. The bilge pump still works on manual but auto float switch doesn't activate. Is the float switch easy to replace please and if so how? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

My pet peeve is with float switches. Mechanical switches like to stick, and usually exactly where they will create the worst possible problem. Could be on so it kills your battery, or off, so the boat floods.

Therefore an electronic bilge pump sensor is my preference, and there are a few different brands around. Water Witch is one brand, Whale Pumps use some kind of built in electronic switch that can also be purchased separately.

I would check it first for gravel or grit sticking the wedge. If knacker then just replace the old one exactly where the old one sits making sure you seal the holes, and replace wires into the pump itself.
Wish you luck been there myself a few times

Thanks chaps, I keep her in the water so floating switch needed. Probably hasnt helped that i have an infatuation with flicking it up everytime i have water in the bilge and often forget to turn it to manual when blatting around!

I have an auto sensing pump, it runs every two minutes and if there is resistance it will keep pumping till it goes away, probably not the best one for a mooring but I simply switch it on and don't bother with the trunk as the boat is kept nice and dry.
When diving you bring a fair amount of water into the boat so the pump is handy when you are over a shot having to occasionally unhook and run the boat around in circles to get rid of water!
Its been on the boat for 4 years now and never missed a beat*, switched on all the time we are in the boat.

* apart from the time one of the uys stood in the well and broke the mounting bracket!

We are on our 3 set of Whale pumps in 2 years The Boat has a pair and they all failed in less thean 6 months Replaced foc but jury out on the latest version as one is starting to play up already

Whale Supersub Smart 1100 Automatic Bilge Pump

Problems . Jamming on when submerged . Work better with filter off .

We have 2 batteries and boat is on a mooring for weeks at a time so they are needed and for the most part work , but given rate of replacement I cant give this pump any positives . Try something else

Hi how are you well I hope.
That was the problem with us on the mooring with Rulematic. We have gone back to old fashioned pump and float switch. It works and not as big a draw on the battery

Just ordered the Rule 500 Auto & some new wire to rewire it so hopefully should sort the problem now, it will only be switched on when the rib's being used so no problem running the battery dry
