I agree that soldering can make a cable too rigid - that is why many cars just have a strip of braid for the earth wire. If done correctly though it is still my preffered method.

And talking of solder has anyone noticed just how crap the new lead free stuff is???

Not only is it much harder to wet out, but you need about 60 deg C hotter soldering bit as well. May not seem much but my lads at work report that it is much more likely to cause thermal damage to components being soldered.

Yes, and we Brits are being led by the nose to use it. Whilst there is still exemption, pressure is being brought by our dear old MoD to use it in military equipment, whilst I am told that the US military actually mandate against the lead free stuff.
