Yanmar D16 outboard

Has anyone any experience with these? I am considering bringing one home with me like a mail order bride. I might even buy a seat for it to sit next to me on the airplane home.

I used the d27 as an emergency backup for an inboard diesel on a Zodiac 733 and found it very reliable with both biodiesel and petroleum diesel. I used it several times when it counted and it always saved the day, including hundreds of miles of continuous open ocean. In beam or following seas the best I would get is about 4 knots....but my boat was very very heavy.

An issue in the US, from what I've been told, is that it does not meet environmental requirements so I don't think it's sold here as a result. But working on them is very easy and I assume parts are still available.......

They were used extensively in industry and fishing, and I know they were very popular in the Vancouver/BC area and many other parts of the world so you may hear from others here with more extensive experience.

Be aware of how big and heavy they are (for the horsepower) ....not something you can easily lift up and hang on the transom if you're thinking of using it as an auxillary.

Thanks, I hadn't thought of it for my 7 meter but was thinking of it as a primary on a smaller 10ft sib. It exceeded the hp (15hp) but I thought the weight coud be made up for with the extra hp.

On your d24 do you have any pictures of how it was mounted to your transom?

Hi used to drive it on an Avon sr 5,4 it got to 18 knots but really it WA to heavy for it on a sib of that size it will cause it to sink please don't try. For a non planing work boat it will do super and its reliable.

Thanks to all I will not try it on the sib but I am now interested in it as a standby on the 7 meter. As it doesn't have a tiller do you run a second set of controls as an emergency helm station ? The boat isn't that big!

I have an out of the water picture somewhere that shows how I mounted the D27 but can't find it at the moment. I needed something that could put in service without any delay so mounted it on an aluminum frame that slid up and down on sail tracks/cars. I used EZ Steer to connect to the Bravo II so could then use the wheel and autopilot (but the autopilot didn't work so well with this setup....OK for long ocean runs though). The prop was always in the water but just barely and didn't produce any drag. I had very limited room inboard so wanted to avoid taking any space, and raising the COG, by raising enough to tilt inboard. It worked very well for my purposes and always started the first time.

I hope you can deduce how it was mounted from this collection of pictures........

Never seen a D16, only the D27 and D36. Spent lots of time playing with these, they are great but noisy and heavy. The Army use them alot on air portable bridges and the army assault boat. They will do over 10,000 hours quite easily with regular oil changes.

Haha If I strapped a 55hp kicker engine to the ass end of the 7 meter I am afraid I'd have to have all the people sit on the opposite side. I looked at it again today and I think a back up for my needs is too agressive. I am still looking for a 15hp diesel outboard engine in the US. Damn I thought I had my problem solved...
