They certainly haven't said anything about a Garrett conversion as an option, and I can't say I've read anything about one either. So guessing if there is one, it's not too common?!

And must admit, think I would prefer to keep it standard anyway.

Luckily I'm not in a rush - Easter weekend was going to be my last time using the boat for quite a while, so I'll keep my eyes and ears open and see what I can find for a genuine IHI replacement unit.

I guess my concern would be whether the casing is still intact. Turbo Dynamics were saying as the bearing completely gave way, and the vanes have been hitting the casing, it might not be useable for a refit?

Thanks to Graham (yam man) for his advice - will hopefully drop the turbo over to him and his engineer later this week for an opinion.

And to add insult to injury, the layshaft and/or support bearings on my Defender's gearbox have just decided to let go, so looks like another expensive bill there to drop the box and get it sorted...!

Bearings seem to be causing me lots of problems at the moment!

Yanmar Turbo

I had the same issue on a Yamaha165 turbo, replaced it with a garret t3 had to do a bit of machining with the oil dump pipe, different hole centres but used the same exhaust side housing. Big bonus is you can get parts for the garret unit, bearings seals etc.
if you ever have the same problem it's easy fixed fixed for a few quid.

Many thanks to Graham (yam man) for all his help and advice on this.

Thanks to his local contacts, the turbo has been rebuilt with complete new internals, a second hand (but basically new) intercooler sourced (as the core of my old one had been peppered with high speed bits of turbo vane), and some oil cooler pipes from the same donor engine to replace my rusty ones. With Graham's help, everything's now refitted again, and the engine freshly serviced. We found various clues whilst servicing to indicate the previous owners were perhaps a bit lax in their maintenance - hopefully we've rectified most of those issues now!

I relaunched the RIB today, and first sea trials around Poole Harbour were successful. Long may it continue!

As I happen to have a week of leave this week, look forward to making good use of the boat now it's all sorted again.
