Yamaha 30hp Throttle

Hi I've recently purchased a Zodiac with a 30hp Yamaha 3 cylinder outboard and the throttle is like a switch ie all or nothing. I found it very hard to gradually increase the power to get the boat on to the plane and when it was on the plane I found it hard to adjust the speed.

Is there anyway I can adjust the sensitivity of the throttle or reduce the power of the engine, would changing the prop help. I want to be able to use the boat for fishing and exploring but the engine is just to hard to control for that. Or am I better off just selling the outboard and buying a smaller one?

Is it the type were the throttle is a small switch on the front of the outboard? No reverse, once you start the motor your off?

If it is they are a PITA.
