Yamaha 300hp

Does anybody have any experience of the HDPI Yamaha 300hp 2 stroke.

I heard there were some problems with some of the early ones and loads got dumped but some early ones are still on the market.

Is this just an ugly rumor or is there some truth to this??

Anything else I should look out for if buying one?

Chris

Why not look at the Mercury 300XS - much lighter.

The HPDi engines are usually pretty good but as you said loads of rumours about the 300.

Hi Cod,

the main reason is ££££££

I'd love a Merc personally, but there are very few on the 2nd hand market in my price range that aren't part of some dodgy scam!!!

I wonder if anybody can put the rumors to bed once and for all?

Chris

It was something to do with the water pick up and the fact that sometimes it wouldn't pick up coolant water causing an overheat!

Can't remember whether they just changed the the plastic piece that covers the water inlet or there was more to it.

I'm sure I've said this before, but the 300xs is not available in the UK, as it's not homologated. (no CE certification)

You could import one yourself, but you'll be breaking the law if you use it for anything other than racing!

The word is that it'll never get CE certification, so a 300 Verado is the best bet if you wanna go "black"

How could they ever prove it? Just enter the odd race!!! The Revenger dealers in France seem to supply boats with them.

http://rib.net/forum/showthread.php?...hlight=300hpdi

Just did a search on this site - looks like they DID have some pretty bad problems. the comments came from people actually using them and well respected like petrov.

I don't normally like 4 strokes but the Suzuki 300hp is pretty light and there was a nice one on sale here not long ago about half price.

300 HPDI problems

HPDI's - we had a number (10+) 150 HPDI's they were worked hard (2,000 hours before routine replacement) & pretty bombproof. 250/300 HPDI's did not have the same reliability record - different engine block broght major faults. Its pretty well documented if you search the internet.

Wouldn't touch a Suzuki with an extra long barge pole I'm afraid! Too many very bad experiences with very early ones.

I know its not very good indicator of how the current ones perform but past experiences do colour anybodies future decisions.

Interesting reading on the 300HDPI though.

Many thanks

Chris
