will a 50HP four be enough for a SR5,4

Hi,

I'm looking at either an 85/90 Yam 2 stroke for one of my Avon seariders but wonder how well she'd go with a Honda 50 4 stroke as there's a new one at a bartgain price. Alternatively can anyone advise on the fuel consumption for an 85/90 Yam 2 stroke not wide open on the throttle stops.

I've got a 55hp pn my SR4 and it goes well, I would think you'd need more on a 5.4.
If you have a search it might have been mentioned before?

The Honda 50hp 4-stroke will move the SR5.4, but I can't help but feel you'll be disappointed with its perfomance. Any idea how many people will be on board, what you plan to do with it (diving, fishing, etc)?

The Honda 50hp probably weighs in at 101kg compared to the Yamaha 90hp 2-stroke (109kg). Incidentally there are a couple for sale at http://www.billhigham.co.uk/submit_f...=used outboard or www.outboard-services.com (Isle of Man)

Yamaha (4 cylinder) and Suzuki (3 cylinder) are offering new 60hp 4-strokes out soon (if they're not already launched) which will only weigh 110kg. The next engines in the 4-stroke range (the F80 and F100) weigh in at a massive 170kg, just under the maximum weight you can stick on a 5.4.

DON'T do it!

I got my boat with an old 'rude premix 60 on and while it went it was not half as much pleasure to drive as it is with the 90 I now have. Incidentaly now I use LESS petrol and oil than I did with the 60 as I am not having to drive it so hard.

If you look around the forum most 5.4 owners have 80 to 90 on the transom with a few having a 70 - 75.

If you have any intention of going out with more than just yourself on board and/or towing toys the 50 will really struggle to get you out of the hole.

I had an Avon d5.6 and it required two 50 hp Hondas to make 30 knots with two onboard and a 96 ltr fuel tank. The engines and rib were 1998.

Canlt help out with the 5.4 comments, but to add to the soup:

My old SR4 had a 25. it went "ok", but not particularly fast, and with absolutely no more than 2 aboard.

Many moons ago on a Sportsboat course (shows you how long ago it was! ) they had an SR5.4 with twin 30s. (standardised on Yam 30s on all boats in the centre) Unfortunately they were the last two premix engines on site, and the week before one of them got a drink of neat fuel. Net result was that we used it 4 up with a single 30. It went, it planed, but it was a " bring a good book" moment.......

So if you are getting it for a song, it will probably get you by.

My dad used to have a 5.4 with a slightly fiddled Merc 90 2 stroke, nice and high on the transom and a laser 2 stainless prop. It would do 45 knots plus if you put up with a bit of chinewalking and sit at 30 all day burning very little fuel. I'd think that the 50hp Honda would have to be at wide open throttle to get 30, and that's no good for fuel consumption! Loaded up it would be painfully slow

our 4m SR had a 50 two stroke and it was great- be 'orrible on a 5.4 . esp a small Honda which in my opinion always seem way underpowered compared to what the badge on the hood says!

....but are (or certainly were) the lightest 4- stroke 50Hp on the market...... Not too dissimilar in weight to a 2- stroke.

I think the one thing we can all safely say is that there is a big difference between "it goes" and "wheeeeeeeeeeeeee".
