I've got a 4.7m Zodiac with a 2 stroke mariner 50 which weighs 75kg IIRC, with 2 people it's hard work to lift on and off, if it didn't live on a trailer it'd never get used.

Small sibs really don't like too much weight down aft, I'd give serious consideration to a 2 stroke. They're so much cheaper as well

Get a two stroke all day long. Especially if you putting it in the back of the car. Your bound to put it in on the wrong side at some point and then the oil will cause an issue. A two stroke is much lighter and you can just throw it in the boot (not quite throw, that would just be silly, ).

Had a 8hp Merc 4 stroke on a sib and that was bloody heavy at 38kg, ok for a very short distance (a few feet), but soon got very tired of doing it.

Then caught the rib bug and well the rest is history...... or a re-mortgage (if i had my way), but the wife, oh the wife.

I think your wrong, i'm sure a four stroke has more torque, in fact yeah defo it has. If you look at motocross bikes a four stroke can run on tick over where as a two stroke would just stall, hence more torque.

Correct me if i'm wrong.

Depends on many things not just what stroke the engine is. The 2 stroke will always give quicker acceleration which together with weight will support towing better at that HP IMHO

speak again to the dealer but bear in mind he wants a sale and that cannot happen if he says 2 stroke is better!

Perhaps a compromise is in order.... Go for the 3 Stroke

Take the advice of all the posts, SIB+2S= ! Have to ask one other thing though, unless there is a *really* good reason for buying new and again being a bit of a 'stuck record' get yourself a 'used' rig from the dozens listed every week on eBay - for the dealer price of just the boat *or* the engine you will easily find a barely used boat in as new condition complete with a last generation 2 stroke and probably a trailer too from people who bought new and used it half a dozen times - if it doesn't work out then you can sell if for the same money and see if boating or that particular combination of SIB/HP is for you - most of us on here didn't get the right boat the first time.

Buy a new boat and new engine and kiss goodbye to 30% + depreciation as you load it in the car...

I think your still able to buy provided it's for commercial use. It has to be registered as this from new and if sold on used at a later point it can only be for commercial use again. How that works in practice I don't know.

TBH, never really knew how a 2 stroke works compared to a 4 stroke (just that's it better for a SIB I've learnt) - anyone explain the 2 St please?

Many dealers aren't that fussed if you're commercial or not, they just want your wonga. As long as you sign the bit of paper saying you're commercial which then gets filed in some manuf's archive storage unit somewhere never to be looked at again...

That's an interesting vid - makes you wonder how much more advanced 2 strokes could have become if manufacturers had really wanted to overcome the emissions issue and seriously develop/refine them further...

Don't know about motorbikes but after getting sick of breaking 4 stroke Mercurys we put a pair of 1980's Evinrudes on a big monohull and it goes faster, gets on the plane quicker but uses more fuel and is noisier.

Selling two 4 strokes even with one broken and in pieces gave my mate a lot of fuel money.

We have seen it before though, same boat, same horsepower, the 2 stroke is quicker on the plane. I don't know if it is the extra weight on the transom or they are gutsier but I think there is more to the story than just the 'statistics'.
