Which 2.5HP New Outboard

I am in the market for a brand new outboard to pull my Dinghy.

I had a Mariner 3.5 on it but its just too heavy to carry so need something a bit lighter to use mobile.

Anyway the Mariner has now been sold so the search begins.

Suzuki seem to offer a good deal around at around £520

Tohatsu around £527

Yamaha a bit more expensive around £570

Which is the best engine in the class?

Help

That depends on on what your buying criteria is

suzi v light and we get lots of good servicing work from them and they often get clogged up and have the probably the worst gear box in history.

Tohatsu: great wee engines but heavy like the yam made by nissan and the same as mercury/ mariner

Yam: heavy but amazing build quality and considering the numbers sold it is a tiny number that get issues. also a lot of commercial guys use them

Honda: air cooled , v light at 12kg v v reliable but due to being air cooled it is the loudest by far but no louder than a 10 hp 2 stroke. also 6 year warranty so an extra year than the others.

so.......

if you can live with the noise honda ( its no that loud so hear one running so you can make up your own mind)
if not and reliability is more important than weight yamaha
if noise and weight are the most important thing the suzi
if its based on units sold then yam or honda

Why not get a Yamaha 2Hp 2 stroke. Ok its going to be a few years old but they are bullet proof. I have just got rid of my Mariner 2.3 4 stroke because of the weight issues.I can pick up the wee Yammie with one hand.I got an immaculate one for £175.Missed one on Gumtree that went for £100!!

well it comes down to how reliable you need it to be then as though the yam outsells the suzi by a huge factor we fix and repair more suzi's than yams.

Note: I am not talking about all suzi engines here just the ones under 5hp ones.

Either way dealers are lucky to make anything on these as margins are around 10% i.e. £50 - PDI ( pre deliver inspection), adding oil, running in test tank, paperwork, demo of engine, credit card charges etc so...buy the suzi please as these are a good income stream in the future!

The Mariner 3.5hp four stroke you can buy new only weighs 18kg. Is this the one you had on your boat?

So if weight was the main issue then I would go with the Suzuki DF 2.5 four stroke, as it is the lightest at about 12kg.

The Honda is noisy and has a centrifugal clutch, you you have to rev it up to get moving, whereas the Suzuki had a F/N gearbox.
I have heard the Honda in operation and it does make a bit of a headache inducing din tbh, certainly louder than my Tohatsu 9.8.
Fine for a tender, to get to your yacht for instance, but I would prefer the Suzuki for more extended use.

I've just found this on eBay. 2nd hand Yamaha f2.5 for £399 including carry bag. Supposedly it's like new with only a couple of hours use.

The ebay number is 200951410425

PS - The item is not connected to me in any way.

Wow yes seen this but I am always worried about, the 'Only 2 hours use' tag.

Been offered a new Yamaha 2.5 delivered for £565

Suzuki I could pick up from a local dealer for £515

Yes the weight is a issue on the Yamaha but the build quality does seem better. The mariner I had was around 18kg, It was totally unreliable and I did not like it, Got stranded out a sea and had to row back, took my 1 hour I was not happy, Hence the sale! reliability is a big Plus for me

I guess the dealers wouldn't have made much from my purchase of the Suzuki 2.5hp.

Over the last three years ..since new.. it has ran faultlessly for many many hours for me. I use it mostly at a slow trolling speed.. trying to find mackerel and the more elusive sea trout on my spinners.

It has never seen a dealer since I bought it. Simple to operate..service and get to the impeller. I have checked the impeller twice but never felt the need to change it in its three years of use.

Only complaint I have ..and its not really a complaint..but if it has been running on tick over for ages.. then I try to quickly open the throttle..it gets bogged down a bit..as if the plug has oiled up on a two stroke. However I soon learned that a couple of blips with the throttle cleared its throat and it would run at fast throttle again no problem.

Would I buy another ? Yup..without hesitation..its very light and has a huge carry handle

I cant comment on the other small four strokes as the rest of my smaller outboards are 2 strokes.

So I got another one :-)....

Was so smooth and quiet for a single piston..loved it.

Much more usable than my 2 stroke 3.5...

The Suzuki DF 2.5 is as light as a 2hp two stroke and it's a water cooled four stroke with a neutral position on the transmission
