I would go for the Verado, used to do a lot with FICHT (before E-Tech) but after trying the Verado that is the engine and I am having one on my 600XS-Arctic (275)

I think that there is a danger of being "Power crazy". Considering that all outboards have a similar top rev range. If it's out and out speed that you're after, then yes you can run perhaps a higher pitched prop with more HP.But, when you have 6.5m Rib, running it's max HP engine and propped up, the slightest bit of sea and you won't be running it flat out unless you have balls of steel. On the other hand extra power is good when regularly carrying a boatfull of people, divers etc. How often do we run WOT? The fuel useage goes into orbit. Race prepped 6.5m Vipermax's ran 150's, which begs a question.

My 5.75m with a 100 hp was just fine it would push 37 knots on a good day!
But now I have the 150 hp Opti so far 46 knots which is fun but a can now cruse at say 30 to 35 knots at a far more economical pace, in stead of 20 knots with the 100!
So for me I now can dump the family & have a blast on my own & still cruse at 30 knots with out drinking lots of fuel.

Fair enough.

My transom is for a normal longshaft and there isn't much freeboard at the stern. My tubes are mounted very high though!

Could always do with more power. 175 would be good for me.

I would say 175 is plenty of power for a boat this size, we have a 200 on our 7.5 and trimed is plenty.............unless you want to be rocket man.

We dont often get to top speed, so i would go for an engine with mid range torque for when you get into the chop.

I would go for an ETEC but then i do have an Evinrude FITCH, its been good to us

E-Tec 200 HP

If you can wait some more weeks, go for the new E-Tec 200HP witch will only weight 190 kg. That is 100 kg less than the Verado. On a vipermax 6.5 that can make a serious difference.

The picture is of a viper max 6.5 with a E-Tec 225 H.O. It goes like hell!

i must admit that the etec 200 is looking more and more favorable, the speed angle does not worry me as this will be my slowest vehicle so i think the 200 will give me the reserve i am looking for

that is a fab picture, how come it has a 225 as they are only rated to 200 normally?
