What year is this.

Can anyone help with this engine, what year is it, and will it have carbs, its a 2 stroke, ive never seen one this colour before, any information would be good, thanks,

I'm pretty sure Thats a mid 90's carbed 2 stroke. Not bad engines.

The guy whose selling it, tells me its an 06, is this possible? ive not seen it in the flesh, only email pics, if i could get the engine no, would it tell me the year?, thanks.

Looking at the cowl design the oldest it can be is a 1995 which can be determined by the oil filler. If it's a flap on the front of the cowl is a 1995 if it's a screw filler it 1996/7 onwards. The flap was only used for 1995 production and changed because it leaks badly when the engine is tilted. I know I have one!!!!!. The decals look lates 90's early 2k to me but I'm more familiar with the Merc equivalent. Hope that helps cheers Chris

Yes checking the decals it's 1996 possibly early 1997 don't think I'm wrong on this. Shame the cowls been painted blue though as this could be a nice looking motor. These generally fetch circa £1800 to £2000 for a decent one. Hopefully you've got a good deal lined up on this one. Incidentally the serial number is a sticker on the saddle but also stamped into a welch plug on the block behind the lower covers. This can be difficult to see without a torch and even harder to read with out a mirror or removing the covers.

Thanks for that Chris, is there anything particular i should be looking for when i go and see it, apart from, starting, gears, pumping water, tilt etc, so far the seller has been (economical with the truth,) so i dont trust him too well so far, thanks again,

It's a difficult one as there could be a any number of issues with an engine of this age with unknown service history. Ideally I'd compression check it and ensure all cylinders are even. The engine mounts are likely to be shot unless they've already be done although you can check the lower ones easily enough by removing the plastic cover 2x self tap Phillips. Parts are still freely available with the exception of the power trim seals which are no longer manufactured however can obtained from the states cheaply enough. Just check the power trim is not leaking around the top of the cylinder. Also probably not practical till you've bought it but I'd would want to drop the gear lube and check for water ingress (milky oil). There not a bad motor with plenty of grunt. Don't be put off just don't get your fingers burnt.

Definately not 2006. Definately do a compression check before buying,
Parts are all available for these and relatively cheap too .

Also these motors had a Stator change around 1996-1997 check the colour and see if its a red or black one. Have a look under the flywheel !. Black stators do fail quite regularly and can be an expensive part to replace , But are available off the shelf.

has it got a serial number either on an aluminium what looks like a core plug, down on the stb side near the bottom of the p/h? If it has you can go onto the brunswick web site and go on their download centre and find the model year.They also put a s/n decal on the transom mounting brackets.the age of an obm (merc/mar) is when it was registered, which can be differant to the model year.

It looks like a late 1980s/early 1990s

Thanks for all the help with this, but I never got it in the end, I got another (engine boat trailer package) see my other post, Ill be swapping the engine over and selling the the boat and trailer in the near future.
