Decade I'd say latter third of 20th Century. This is a fine example of the engine makers art, much sought after by collectors. Note the craftsmanship & detailing on the block & flywheel. If it has the original plugs it will fetch a premium price. Difficult to value, in the right auction with the right buyer it might fetch ooh! one hundred pounds possibly more. I suggest entering it in at Bonhams or Christies, failing that, the south west boat jumble

Mid eighties. £100 tops.
or you could stick some avgas in it and watch it blow up which would be far more entertaining than sellin it!!

Hi Thanks for your reply.

Lets just assume that I want to throw £58.00 away by "blowing it up" what grade of Avgas would I need for this entertaining spactical?
Might make an interesting youtube video.

I once had a Yamaha 8hp that was duel fuel started on petrol then switch to Kerosene (a form of Avgas) that did not "blow up".

In fact 1 of the RAF target towing boats R.T.T.L. 45 knotts ran on avgas a bugger to start but boy once it got going.

99p start with those photos, it you should make £200-£250 easy. I sold a 3hp Johnson version for £295 but that was in the spring.

Thank you for your informed response (you having already sold one),

I was a little bit concerned that the serial number has beeen removed at some point, do you think that it makes much difference?

why would avgas make it blow up? its only leaded petrol with a higher octane rating to make it work in thinner air - its not rocket fuel! my guess is that you would just get pre ignition and run like a bag of shit.
i do however think that rocket fuel would make a rather interesting video on youtube!

I had a dual fuel Yamaha 15 hp kerosine outboard but although Kerosine's used in jet engines it's not used as av gas in petrol aircraft as it's more like a refined Paraffin in fact I used paraffin in the outboard as it was easier for me to get paraffin from my local blacksmiths . RAF boats that used aviation fuel in the Napier sea lion ( marine version of the aircraft engine ) in most cases the bad or poor starting was down to the wrong size cartridges issued for the Coffman starter this had gone on for many years before the issue was resolved.

its strange that kerosene was used in petrol engines as kerosene which is basically the same as jetA1 fuel, has very similar properties to diesel - which as we know doesnt work in a petrol. jetA1 is at times used to power diesel engines such as airport vehicles.

Kerosine engines with carburettors usually have a slightly lower compression than normal petrol engines & need to be very hot before you can swap over from petrol to Kerosine / paraffin or like the old T.V.O. ( tractor vaporising oil ) engines often the fuel / carb is preheated by the exhaust or hot water
Diesel engines inject or atomise the fuel similar to jet engines rather than having carbs . Me old outboard was just like a standard Yamaha 15 2 stroke but had a lower cylinder compression & the timing was slightly different , think the thermostat ran hotter , the carb float chamber was heated by a hot water pipe from the cooling water , also had 2 fuel pumps back to back & 2 float chambers it tended to leave an oily sooty film all around the stern of the boat .

Ok, Ok, I am impressed

Even though you knew that the engineer was going to (try) start the engines it still frightened the crap out of you

Flashpoint of kero is approx half (in degrees C before anyone starts quoting Kelvin ) of the flashpoint of diesel.

I would guess at that size and age, probably not. For £100-ish as a buyer as long as it ran I would be happy - if it was a 300Hp 2013 MY Opti I might be a bit more suspicions..... But that's just me!

Based on your profile - it would likely be a perfect aux for your SIB!

Must admit it crossed my mind more than once but I have my eye on a Mariner (or 2 ) 4hp 2st s/s
