the third cylinder on my suzuki 25 makes hell of a difference to vibration and a smoother sound than 2 pot motors but vibration has never bothered me it is what it is as long as it keeps going is all i am bothered about.

A 3 cylinder 4 stroke will be far smoother than a 2 as it runs 2 up one down which gives better balance. The added weight of the 3rd cylinder is outweighed by the gain in smoothness. Previously you wouldn't see many 3 cylinder 2 strokes under 40 or 50 hp as 2 cylinders were fine up to these sizes and meant weight was saved by only having 2 cylinders. The drive for 4 stroke means there is a requirement for a 2 cylinder engine but it gives the designers a headache because of the 2 up configuration requiring added weight to balance it out.
I'd imagine a modern 2 cylinder 2 stroke will be a much smoother engine than it's 2 cylinder 4 stroke cousin
