Whacked my skeg

I was out on the water on Wednesday morning when I motored into a rock ..... I was doing 7 kts at the time but it sounded awful and my immediate thoughts were ...... F$£K this is gonna be expensive ..... anyway the engine didnt cut out and I continued to enjoy a great day with my wife and kidz ...... when i got the boat on the trailer afterwards i was able to inspect the damage fully and the good news is the hull was completely unscathed ..... also the prop was completely undamaged but the skeg took the full brunt of the impact ...... it is clearly damaged but it didnt seem to affect the boats performance ...... so my questions. 1. Are there likely to be any hidden problems I may encounter in the future? 2. Am I able to have the skeg repaired ? 3. What is likely to be the cost for a new gear box ?4. is it possible to have caused damaged to the engine mountings / transom ......?

sounds like you were lucky if there was no engine vibration after the impact then the prop should be ok.
the skeg can be taken off and repaired

next time do a proper job like me 2wks ago i hit something in the water and it took a lump off my skeg chewed the prop up and bent the drive shaft
think i went over davy jones locker
now looking at a new complete gear box
my transom is fine though

Pics will help, but the skeg did exactly what it was supposed to do: protected the prop. It's not really a necessary part, but, as you found out, it can come in handy.

There may be slightly less turning impulse, but nothing you can't correct for.

If you do have someone weld it up, make sure they take enough care to avoid melting the seals in the gearcase (usually means removing them prior to welding.) two buddies of mine have fried lower units from water ingress after having skegs welded up.

My concern would be with any damage to the gearbox area due to the impact, if this is undamaged then I guess it'll be a simple case of repairing the blade.

If there's no other damage all I would be tempted do is to reprofile the leading edge of the Skeg to do away with that damage.

You could try filling with JB Weld then dressing back... JB is pretty tough stuff, although strength there is not a major requirement.

Yep chemical metal is what I used on my old Johnson, built it up then sanded back to match the profile of the leading edged then a coat of paint.

I'd just get the file out and be done with it ,, as long as the torpedo tube has no damage , you'll be ok

Good mate, not to be attempted whilst on the cider though you good end up with a wiggly profile

search the web for skeggard ( stainless steel ) + blackfinskeg ( rubber/nylon type substance) , these are accessories that fit over damaged skegs a lot cheaper and easier than replacing gearbox cover or welding and grinding.

I'd drain some oil and check to see if there are any metal filings present. If there are, it would suggest there may be some damage inside the leg. This happended to me last year; the engine seemed ok after impact but there was considerable internal damage would I couldn't really detect when sailing home.
