Weeping trim assembly

As some of ye know the stern bracket broke on my etec. I now have the engine back together and notice a slight weep from the trim assembly. Is this something I should be considered about. Will water enter the assembly or is it just a case that I will need to top up the unit from time to time?

Is this a case of replacing seals or something else?

Notice that the oil is on the ram when the engine is tilted up.

If it's weeping hydraulic oil, it's only likely to get worse. I'd be more concerned about sea water getting in, and that's a whole different ball game.

Interesting thread here in renewing the seals. Not etec specific, but you get the jist.

Get it sorted sooner than later, I had a slight leak on a merc 90 which I ignored.

The price went from a $25 o-ring replacement to a $1600 job once the salt corroded inside.

What really need to know can I use it for eight weeks and repair over the winter or do I need to repair it now. Will using it for such a short period of time cause corrosion?

I think that could be extremely hard to answere but if it were me I'd just give it a good clean after each use and probably use it now. Is it on a trailer or mooring? I think it's not just the corrosion from the salt but also electolasis if the paintwork is damaged where it leaks (hopefully it's just an o-ring).

I'm sure it will be fine for a couple of months. Order the seals now, and hydraulic fluid. Tohatsu use Mobil ATF220. Not sure about ETECs?

If you notice the engine struggling to lift, or a gurgling sound on using the trim, then you may need to act sooner. Do you have access to a tool to take off the trim ram cap?

You need to repair that immediately, or it'll get very expensive.

Have you got time before the next use to fix it?

Assuming that they are all similar mine uses a "moving" pump so I assume creates low pressure one side of the circuit. Low pressure = sook...... whether it survives 8 weeks of internal brine or not will depend on a lot of factors.

If not bent then seal might have been unseated during impact might be a quick fix if bent find out how much you have to buy to fix ie: just the ram if all the lot plenty of good grease on the ram to lubricate the seal from both sides run till you can sort in the winter just keep oil topped up.as it gets worse you will have to make the choice of doing an early fix. It will last a while though.

Cheers

I don't think the ram is bent as I put a steel edge against it after impact saw no problems. Looking into a seals kit from the us
