Water separating fuel filter

Hi

I'm looking to change my current water separating fuel filter from the generic quicksilver ones which are just a sealed cartridge filter with no bowl / bleed to one of these Racor ones -

Racor Filters, 120R-RAC-01 Petrol Spin-On Fuel Filter

Engine is a Suzuki DF140 (petrol) so I think the 114 litre per hour flow rate this filter can handle should easily be sufficient.

Filter will be mounted inside console so not in direct salt spray etc.

Does anyone else use this particular Racor filter? Any pro's / con's to be aware of or better filter to buy for similar money?

Finally any reason this filter wouldn't be allowed if I were to get the vessel coded?

We fit these to all Ospreys with over 90hp. However we do tend to overspec anything in the fuel / electrical systems so I am sure the one you posted will be fine.

I've bought the one Chris suggested, even though its a bit overkill, as I found BHG Lymington currently have a few on Ebay for £43 posted, so cheaper than the smaller one from elsewhere

Anything has to be better long term than the quicksilver one

I had one of the 120 filter assemblies and returned it . Not because it was no good but I wanted 2 micron filtration for the fuel injection rather than 10 micron. you can't get 2micron in the 120 assembly. A problem you will have with the filter is that it is on so tight at the initial manufacture it is really difficult to remove the filter on a work bench, let alone at sea. So take your time when you get it, remove and replace the filter hand tight and it will be fine. It may be to have the boat coded you may have to use a metal bowl . Other wise a top bit of kit. Nik

Don't think so. I've seen a "cage" around a glass one apparently to keep a surveyor happy.

The powdercoating fails after about 5 years and corrosion creeps under it especially under the sealing face.

The rubber seal on the drain tap generally swells and fails around the same time.

I didn'y know about the failings. I'll watch out for those. The mercury one I first fitted suffered a similar fate. nik

I used to fit whenever possible the Racal water trap filter with the bottom part clear plastic. Merc/Mar dealers can supply them as other chandlers as well I expect.

I came across these when I was rigging the current BP, very impressed & probably would have fitted one if I hadn't already bought the traditional glass bowl type & a supply of cartridges.

Cheers PD I saw those online too, they look good, the replacement filter is pricey though..

It certainly neatly does away with corrosion issues!

If you filter is console mounted as you said, I would be surprised if corrosion was a major problem..

If you were transom fitting then there is a Nylon version of the Raccor style available however I forget who makes it. The Raccor cartridges fit it too.
