Water in cowling

I spotted water spilling out of the cowling when tilting the engine up !. I checked the rubber seal between the main cover and the bottom cowling but water ended up in the bottom cowling. After taking the cover off with the engine running I have found the source of water , a removable metal cover at the base of the block held on by two bolts. Can anyone tell me is it safe for me to remove the cover and replace the gasket which I think lives behind it ?

Someone is going to have too. Whether its you or an expensive Merc/Mariner dealer is the question, so, just go for it and get stuck in.
