Water bubbling from gear linkage

Hey guys ,

I’ve got an aux 4hp mariner 2 stroke.

Just giving it a run today and noticed some water bubbling out of the gear linkage where it comes out of the lower unit.

Is that normal?!

Thanks guys. I wonder how the hell it does it... how can water get there? I’ve had the lower unit off today to change the impeller and I was trying to figure it out for ages but can’t for life of me understand how water could get up there. The inside of the lower unit isn’t wet at all...

I've got the same engine too. Great auxiliary. I keep a small bit of nylon strimmer line in my tool kit as the tell-tale can block easily.
