Verado Fuel Octane

Hi All

Just got some interesting news from a Mercury man at the Miami boat show who said that if the ambient air temp is below 75 degrees F then there is not need to use Super Unleaded as standard unleaded will only drop 5 horses off the 275 engine. Nice little money saver for the likes of Nauti Bouy and me..

Yup colder the better for engines - especially turbos or supercharged.

To be honest have been using unleaded, not had any issues. Tony (Tcwozere) and myself went round to Drivers Wharf today to get the rib weighed, averaged 40 knots both ways, 50 knots at one point back down Southampton Water and used total of 28litres per engine which I thought was very good considering we did 40 miles.

Having always put ordinary unleaded in mine, how the fook would you detect an extra 1.8 % power by using super ?? or am I missing something?

Air/turbo compressed engines always perform better in cooler atmospheres as the air is more dense then, hence the use of intercooling, in other turbo installations to mimic this very situation.

Agree with all that is said, however Mercury say that a 275 running on standard fuel puts out 260 hp. Nice to know that all the extra horses we paid for over the 250hp engine are worth while with standard dockside fuel in this country.
