Verado 350 vs Yamaha F300 vs Etec G2 300 (twins)

Realized I should have posted this here:

I hope this doesn't open a can of worms like it does on some forums...

We have the new build Parker 1000 coming soon - unrigged. We will purchase and install the engines locally for warranty and dealer reasons.

We wanted Verados, but the dealer is saying we have to purchase all the accessories with it (props, gauges, steering, harnesses, totaling approximately $6k) and if we repower we have to do the same thing. Just repowered our 9m and now have extra useless gauges and accessories. As we are planning to replace the engines every two years (maximum) this means we would end up with many thousands of dollars worth of unwanted accessories in the long run.

To that end, we are now considering the Yamaha F300 and the Etec G2.

The nice thing about the G2 is they are giving a 3-year 1000hr commercial warranty, vs the Verado and Yamaha 1-year warranty.

All pricing and dealer reliability being the same, any thoughts on which way to go?

Mate of mine is a local RIB dealer ( south coast UK ), he fitted a pair of G2's - think they were 200's to a new RIB last year, lots of gremlins and numerous visits to the Evinrude dealer to get plugged in and repaired, maybe a isolated case but the RIB dealer said it was the first and last time for the G2's, think he normally rigs Verados to his boats.

That doesn't really make sense, if they are priced separately so you know what they cost then surely they are options? I am guessing these are the only verado dealer nearby? Perhaps a call to Mercury sales rep to point out how much he looses over next few years...

However from a different perspective presumably 90% of potential buyers for your old engines will need all the fly by wire kit, gauges etc anyway?

It doesn't make sense to me either.

Essentially I don't want the labour and purchase costs of ripping all the "old" stuff out and replacing to sell with the used gear. If whoever buys the engines needs that stuff, they can buy it from the dealer!

I want to be able to unbolt, unplug, plugin in the new ones, bolt on and go. Maybe not in that order

Fair enough - but when you have a "fly-by-wire" warranty issue - who's going to stand over the old/out of date/previous version ancillary gear you kept for convenience?

How many hours a year are you actually doing??

1000+ hours a year right now.

Considering I am still running off an old barely colour Vessel View on my 2015 engines and they had no issues doing that, why do I have to buy gauges (what if I wanted a new VV7?)? And I already had props that they put back on. etc etc.

Etec dealer said they would have no problem just swapping the engines, and would be able to further discount the engines if that was the case.

I do understand that if a new Verado came out or fly-by-wire etc that we'd have to change it out, but why spend an extra $6000 every year if not required?

Sounds fishy. I'd call Mercury HQ and ask to speak to the president of the company. You'd be surprised how often you can get a hold of them.

I'd ask if the local dealer is perhaps confused or if that's a local dealer policy? Keep it friendly, don't throw your local guy under the bus just yet, give him and out for now, especially if you have limited options on the island. Nobody is going to want to hear, "I want to buy your product but I can't...."

I purchased a new engine from across the country at the suggestion of my local dealer and he installed it and sold me the rigging. Said he can't get pricing as low as the big dealers in FL because he does such low volume. I think the dealers have options....

I was able to talk with the Etec dealer today and their mechanic, as well as test run a set of them. Lots of power, a deeper growly sound than the Verados and a bit louder, but honestly nothing that the guests up front would be able to tell the difference from due to the windage.

The new engine looks like a good setup - they have a relatively easy to access sight tube for seeing the level and clarity of the lower unit oil, nifty feature. They also split the exhaust from the pistons into two chambers from each set, meaning better heat distribution and less stress on the bottom cylinder.

You two are both giving each other the reaction you want, and are as bad as each other. If you were actually offended by what was posted you would have used the "Report Post" option and let us deal with it. However EVERYONE here is fed up with the two of you squabbling.

Yesterday I refreshed my memory of how the "Ban User" function works on here. Its very straight forward and is a lot quicker than being the playground monitor. Can I suggest you both do the following so everyone else gets some peace too: Follow this link, and add each other to the list..

Well, not quite everyone - I find them quite compulsive viewing - like watching mice playing under a Paiute Deadfall...

But I hear ya!
