40hp 4 stroke value

For a 2003 motor - say just over £2100 as a trade in?

yamaha

I would say if it was mint with low hours it should sale for around 60% of its retail value, The trouble is with most dealers is that they offer low prices when they buy goods and then they sell them for too higher price, Not fair if you ask me and also dishonest .Ok they have got to make a living but do it with a little more respect guys .

Why so? A dealer buys a motor off you for X pounds. He has no comeback at all if you have been less than honest about it's condition. He then sells it on at X plus. He is liable for it's condition as a trader and so has to allow that in his pricing as well as covering his overheads and , hopefully, making a profit. Why do you describe that as "dishonest"... "you may enlighten me"

I can only talk of my personal experience of the half a dozen dealers that i do know, I am yet to be offered what i would call a reasonable price that would reflect the condition of the goods that i am trading, I did not say that all dealers
are unfair and i know that there is some genuine ones, anything that i want to sell i do it myself for example 2 years ago i had a 1993 evinrude 25hp for sale
with low hours mint condition i wanted £700 for it the dealer offered me £170 is that fair enlighten me?.

Tricky to know "condition"

It's difficult for a trader to really know the condition of an outboard. Why, also would anyone want to sell a good outboard? (unless of course it is too small and bought in error)

The price I gave was from a trade guide - the retail value for the same engine was £3100 ish. This reflects the fact that the dealer has to find space for it, possibly collect it, take it off the boat, advertise it, check it over, service it and offer a warranty and still hope to make a living. - so, about £1000 mark up for all of that work - he's got to sell a lot of second hand motors to do well.

Secondhand motors just don't seem to be worth much. I find it quite difficult when assessing an insurance claim for what seems like minor damage to a gear case for example. 75hp Mariner, 5 years old, new gearbox and bits about £3000 inc VAT to fix it. The insurance company will write it off and pay out perhaps £1600 to the assured. Unfortunately it is almost impossible for the assured to buy a good condition replacement engine, especially for his £1600 pay out. Makes me feel like a right B*****d giving the bad news

Still, if you are in the market for a S/H engine there can be some bargains out there if you can find them. It works both ways!

How many people would be looking to buy a 12 year old car that's spent half its life in or near the sea?

With pleasure..... just because you "Wanted £700 for it" does not make it worth £700 to the dealer. No one is forcing you to sell it to the dealer. If your not happy with the price, sell it privately for what you can get for it.
So yep... it's fair for the dealer to offer what he thinks its worth and as fair for you to say it's worth more than that and I don't think I'll sell it to you...

Hmmm

You can look around and get a 50 HP Fuel injected four stroke complete and retail for only £3500 inc vat with a 2 year warranty, this is going to therefore reduce the secondhand trade in value of your engine.

People will simply pay the extra for piece of mind by buying new if you ask too much for engine.

But you will get your best price privately on www.boatsandoutboards.com

Keep it on the boat to be able to demo to buyers who can then see it running

Right, last chance - 106 hours fully serviced - yamaha 40hp four stroke in immaculate condition except for prop that has been sand blasted (joys of Norfolk). Including remotes, tank, and monitor - bids above £2,600
