upper shifting rod stripped

I was changing the water pump on my Suzuki dt30. After replacing the pump I could not reconnect the shifting linkage. the brass coupling was stripped and the first few threads on the upper shifting rod were as well . this rod seems to be impossible to replace any ideas.

Get a new brass coupling & clean the threads on the rod with a die.

if the thread is no good on the rod when you have cleaned it up , chop it back to good thread , noting how much you take of then make the brass coupling that much longer , simples ,,,,,,,,,,,

The upper rod is in the shaft no cutting or re threading possible, unless I completely disassemble motor. A longer coupling would be ideal but I can't find one.

have you got any friends with a lathe , its a very simple thing to make if you know what thread it is ,,,,,,,,,
