Trying to start old Selva 35hp

I've got this old and tatty Selva 35hp that I'm trying to start. Hooked it all up on a stand, but I'm having trouble:
Got an assortment of wires: red, black, green and yellow. Red and black straight forward. Yellow i've worked out is "start". Got this far and got stuck; tried starting it on the yellow but it just wouldn't fire up (turned over fine on the start motor but that's it

). I was thinking that maybe the green wire (see photo) is for a kill-cord/stop switch. Therefor.......does it need to be connected whilst the engine is running (and hence why it won't start). If so, which wire does it need to be connect too.

Any other suggestions (fuel's getting in there and there's a good spark) would be great too!

Don't know for certain but you probably need to do something with the green wire. My engine will turn over without the kill cord in, but it won't fire. I think the kill cord normally breaks a circuit to ground, so I suppose it should work so long as it isn't earthed. Have I contradicted myself?

If the green wire is for the killcord and it works by going to ground, you could disconnect it totally and it should fire up. If it doesn't then its possible that the Kill wire works differently or its not that wire at all.

Also are you sure its just the Kill switch stopping you or do you have another problem after its been stood for so long ?

I Have just seen this thread re wiring on a 35 h.p. Selva.

Firstly, the ignition system on a Selva will not work if the kill switch wires are simply disconnected.

To isolate the switch remove the wires form the back of the kill switch and connect them together which will allow the system to work.

If you remove the engine hood there is a Series No. and Engine No. stamped into the cylinder block. If you Email me these numbers together with your postal address I will send you a wiring dia. for that Model year engine.

Hi Mike I'm a new member I have a question if you don't mind.
I have a selva Antibes 35 hp it started today and has since refused to start. It just dies I had it serviced over a year ago and due to illness this is me just getting ready to use my boat. It started and ran every other day as I was just letting it tick over for a few minutes each time But today it kept on dying on me and now it won't start at all
I am a novice so your help will be much appreciated

Bill, Welcome to the forum. Unfortunately Mike G has not been around for a couple of years (this thread is from 2005!).

I'd suggest a new thread in the "Engines" section might get a better response. But its useful if you can give people some more information about what you have already tried:

- Is the fuel fresh? And was fuel left in the carbs?
- Is the kill cord definitely attached properly?
- Are you starting from battery or pull cord (is the battery and all connections good)?
- Is fuel getting to the cylinders/plugs?
- Is it giving a spark at (all?) the plugs?
- What are you doing with throttle and choke to start it? [if its electronic choke does it actually work at the carb?]
- What does "kept on dying on me" mean? It started and then cut out? - were you doing anything like putting it in gear or trying to rev it?
- Are you running on muffs or in a bucket?

Answer is yes to all electric start and in a full bucket
