Tohatsu 70 ELPTO

Hi All

Is there anyone out their that knows anything about a 70 hp ELPTO tohatsu. can you please tell me how you found it. I am getting a good deal on a new one and it is approximatly 3700 euro cheaper than a 60 HP ETEC. 3500 euro buys a lot of petrol

Note I am not interested in the 70 HP TLDI

What do you want to know?

I've got a 50 ELPTO and it's good. Very simple design and bullet proof. Tohatsu were used commercialy by fisherman as a solid workhorse long before they became a known private make.

Tohatsu also used to make the likes of the smaller merc / mariner engines (I have a Merc4 that's effectively a Tohatsu).

Take a look at the tohatsu website for info on engines but also for service centres etc as they can be a bit harder to find.

That tohatsu is very light , your 490 should go well with that on the back

I had a 2001 model for a year or so, lovely engine, incredibly smooth and responsive, didn't have a single problem with it. It was quite noisy though although that was a plus point for me, also it did enjoy the fuel but no more than a friends brand new 75hp Mariner 2 stroke, which interestingly ran awfully in comparison.

I have got the 70 Tohatsu EPTOL. I bought it new at the beginning of the 2007 season and have found it to be great in every way. It has never missed a beat and has loads of hole shot power. I run it on a 4.85 rib with a 16" pitch prop. According to the GPS it makes 43MPH!. It uses about 25lt of fuel for a good afternoon of messing about on the water. I do carry two 25lts tanks but have never managed to use both in a full days ribing. I would defo recommend.

If you decide to get one I have the workshop manual on disk that I can send to you.

I understand that the tohatsu 70 hp ELPTO are still been manifactured for non EU markets. Do you know this to be true. I was talking to the local fitter to day and he claims that they have ceased making the standard (old style two stroke) as they are now banned in the EU.

I think that he is just trying to sell me a ETEC.

Am I correct in saying that Tohatsu are continuing to make the ELPTO but they cannot be imported into the EU.

I know that Yamaha have abandoned two stroke tech and I think that Mecr/mariner are now just making optimax no more ELPTO(source rib international). But I think that Tohatsu are still sticking to the old style two stroke.

Correct!......ish...

Spare parts for these motors CAN and are still legally imported into the EU, there is no legislation currently being considered to stop this that I know of....Rember if you have all the spare parts, you could in theroy still make the engine!!

These two stroke engines can also STILL be legally imported into the EU for commercial and motor sport use, ie Zapcats, fishermen etc.

There are loads of places to get them serviced,

Mick, It seems to me that the local fitter convinced your missus then.

Etec

The Etec is only costing me 700 sterling more than the 70 ELPTO after the ELPTO is delivered to my home
with such a small price differance I could not pass up the ETEC
