Vintage 5hp tohatsu.. 1970's??

Have undertaken a little project in restoring a previously unloved vintage tohatsu unsure of model or year guessing 70's is really hard to get any help or information on it.

Hi, best to start a new thread and ask for advice with a few pictures of the outboard, and I am sure someone will have the info you are after

Oh Welcome by the way

BUMP....

dragged this anchor out the shed again.... Compression tested, and am getting good compression. Got a drill on the flywheel and am getting no spark whatsoever (plug is fine - my seagull makes it give off a lovely bright spark).

I took the flywheel off, the magnets seem pretty strong, all wires intact, and everything underneath was cleaned up with scotchbrite and put back together... still the same. I previously swapped the CDU, and it made no difference.

I am getting perfect continuity down the HT lead.

WTF do i do next?

I have tried disconnecting the stop button, no joy there either!

I'm sure I did a continuity test on the primary coil previously and it seemed fine!

No, check the plug end of the HT to earth, with no plug attached. Should be no continuity (infinite ohms)

Then check the steel core of the coil to earth somewhere else on the motor-should be 0 ohms.

I checked from the ht to earth and it was 0. Will check from the core tomorrow! Starting to lose my patience! Haha

Cheers as always for the help!

Another nice easy test is to disconnect the coil wiring totally, get a 9v battery and connect the negative to the coil's earth, then flick a bit of wire onto the positive side. Do it fast-you're just after a quick burst of energy. don't actually connect it as keeping it connected could burn the coil out.

You'll get a spark of some description if the coil isn't duff.

Here's the electrical specification for your Tohatsu. Have you checked for continuity from the exciter coil, pulsar coil, etc?

I've had a Tohatsu 5hp 2 stoke for about 17 years now, every summer I pour some fresh fuel in, give it a few pulls and off we go!

Here is the latest....

I fitted a new ignition coil and HT lead, but still the same. I get the occasional spark, but it is VERY weak and barely visible. The old coil is giving the same performance. literally once every 20 pulls or so, I get a tiny spark.

The rage is strong in me at the moment.....

Is there a pulser coil on the 5hp Twatsoo?

Jeez you've changed everything else!

Get to it Simon... I can literally hear that 5hp scream into action!

My Twatsoo goes in on Tuesday. Thrown in the towel as taken it as far as I can without removing flywheel. My money is on the pulsar coil or the exciter.
