Tidying Up Outboard

I am just in the process of sorting out the badly rubbed areas on my Yamaha 50 cowl and leg before i fit to the SR4 in the next few weeks.

I have bought Yamaha paint and primer but have never really sprayed anything that requires a reasonable finish before.

I think i have rescued the decals by trimming off the worn bits and therefore only need to buy one to go on the front so that will save some expense.

So, what grade wet and dry and how many coats would you recommend?.....also any other tips would be great and much appreciated.

Not the best pictures but it is mainly the edges which are rubbed through to metal / plastic.

I know it is only cosmetic but would like to make it look good.

Aren't you best off respraying it all otherwise you'll have to try and blow it into the other paint?

I was thinking of respray but then i will have to buy the decals which i don't think will be cheap.

Do you think respray is the best route to take?

Have you painted the prop? Mines black/ grey and thinking of painting is white- as per new Yam props.

I personally would respray the hood and touch up the leg. It'll look like new if you take your time.

Yep, have removed all the decals and rubbed down with Scotchbrite. I agree with you, would have been a bugger to blend in.

Any ideas as to what grade wet and dry to use etc.

No, i haven't painted it. Quite like the white though.

Not sure about grades of wet and dry but it only needs keying so the other paint will stick. Don't use any silicone based products near it other wise the paint will run off!

Take the scratches out with 240-300ish grade, depending on severity, then move onto 400, then 600 grade, flatting it off until it's really smooth. Use plenty of water and a drop of washing up liquid also helps.

You'll need to apply at least 3 coats of colour to get it looking good. Are you using lacquer separately or is it in the paint?

Have you asked anyone in the vehicle refinish trade if they would do it for you? Metallics can be awkward to work with if you're inexperienced but a car painter would have no problem.
