The best big Four stroke

I would love to know other peoples opinion on what they consider to be the best Four stroke over 200hp on the market ie you have just won the lottery well 5 numbers anyway and its for you.
fuel economy speed etc.etc.

...and I only know the Yamaha F225, powerful, economical...and ultra reliable.

Can't comment on any others.

This Hurts!

I agree with Tim W.

If I had to buy a four stroke then it would be the Yammie, I genuinely think they are the best made and the charter boys I know that run them don't have much grief.

A lot of people seem happy with the Suzukis - mine is great but don't think a 15hp counts in this discussion!!!

We have 4 x 250 suzukis with a total of more than 1000 hours this season. They work wery well, think the most impressive is the torque.
Had some problems with the gearshift/control box, but that is sortet out now.
We had optimax and hpdi last year, and that was a lot of trouble.
We also have one boat with a 200 yam that has 600 hours and one with 2 x 150 yam that has over a 1000 hours.

We have no experience with Verado or E-tec

Regards Roy

Feel free to visit my new web on www.rib-adventure.no , Only in norwegian, but some nice pics in the gallery

Get serious Molly.. Yams any day-but I now reckon that the 2t HPDI version is better than the 4t.. Agree with Codders about the suks- its a very close call nowadays between Yams and Suks-. I just cant help feeling however, that the Suks- although heavier than a Yam cf power to weight is PROBABLY better engineered.Yams got into a bit of bother with the 250, but then again so did some Suks.Everybody has their point of view on this and a concensus doesnt means much- it depends on price/dealer/ spares availabilty/ ect -- basically intangibles.

Call me old fashioned, but I'm a 2stoke fan. I could see the advantage of the fours when there was such a fuel useage difference. Now that the modern HPDI two strokes are as economical, I kinda can't see the point in having a four stroke. I feel that the Fours are over complicated marinised car engines that are now being compromised in efforts to make them lighter and more powerful. This might be an over simplistic and slightly out of date view, but based on fact, I feel.

Couldn't agree more - from what others have said I would go for an ETEC 250 any day.

Are there many Rib charter companys using 250 E-Tec with say 750-1000 hours a year, its just that the ones i see are using Suzuki or Yams. Do they know somthing we dont.
I will admit that i have confirmed my order for a Yam 250 for a number of reasons, one being future value if i need to sell in the future.
I phoned round a few dealers (i know its sneeky) but no matter how good the new two strokes are they nearly all would buy a boat for stock if fitted with a Yam Suzuki or Honda 4 stroke but not keen on the new two strokes all would sell them by brokerage but would not part with there own money.
To be fair on a personal note the E-Tecs are cheeper by a very fair margin and if your crusing in pleasure only then the 3 year servicing thing makes it cheeper still so if the resale is low then i supose you cant have it both ways.
It will be interesting for me as my Brother wants a E-Tec for next year so we should have some friendly rivalary.

Ask him why he'd hang on to the 4stroke? Perhaps he perceives the residual to be better. It's a bit like the old diesel/petrol car thing. We were all brainwashed into wanting diesels, now the petrols are as economical and diesel is considerably more expensive than petrol. We have two diesel 4x4's and neither will do over 25mpg. I'd have a big gutsy petrol if i didn't depreciate like a stone.

I surpose you have answered the queastion, i to have a 4x4 diesel it cost a bit more than the petrol but the differance second hand after 3 years is approx 35% more than the petrol.

Has anyone mentioned the sound ?

I love the sound AND smell of a twostroke.

Friend of mine has sold his Yam v100 and has bought a Suz 140.
His feeling of power on the boat has decreased by 50 %.
The fuel economy is absolutely a lot better.

I like my Optimax 225. She runs great. Next time I will defintely go for an ETEC HO.
No more four stroke for me thank you.
