On your Selva?

Does it have a thermostat?

Do you have anywhere on it to fit a temperature sender?

yes its got a thermostat and got a temp probe /sender unit screwed into the head ,which i belive cuts out the coil packs to shut down the engine when get too hot. weve got it sorted out running nice now, weve had a digital temp probe stuck into the water out of the tell tail and was just wounderind whot it should be around as when the thermostat opened the readings changed to say it had opened.

You'll probably find that it's not a temp sender but a shutoff unit-ie it either works or doesn't and has no analogue output for a gauge.

I'd guess between 60 and 80 degrees for the telltale. It'll change if it's under load.

Correct, the probe switches to ground when the temp gets too high, sounding the alarm in the controls and putting the engine in 'get you home mode', revs are limited to about 2200-2500rpm.

probably better for the motor to shut down completely, just means getting the paddles out. Still the point is the temp probe is a normally open switch.

Slight thread hijack but whenever I have put a finger under it my tell tale is cold to luke warm (less than 30 deg I would say) - does that mean I have a problem?

No, cold is ok-just worry if it's too hot to touch at all!

OK ta, just wondered if it might point to a thermostat not letting the engine warm up which in turn might explain the slightly scary fuel consumption...

I still need an Etec then
