It's partially being "frugal", and partially having a hard time obtaining the spec'd fluid. In my case, I needed to top off the reservoir (hoses at the helm worked loose, and leaked a substantial amount), and neither the local West Marine nor the independent chandler nearby had Seastar fluid. So, went to the backup Dextron II. Haven't noticed any difference.
