Suzuki SDS Diagnostics on my DF20AS.

A review that might help others that have wondered about getting diagnostics...

As I intend to service my 2016 Suzuki DF20AS myself (dealer just did the 20hr) "by the book" decided I ought to have the diagnostic software and leads which arrived last week.

Software was easy to load onto my old "garage" laptop and the disc came with the full pdf manual for operating the software (Ver.8).

The engine connection is to a 4-pin plug under a rather unassuming rubber cover near the fuel filter.

For a portable (just!) outboard that would traditionally have been quite simple the detail of the data available from the Efi system is excellent. Images below show the output of live info while the engine is running plus a real time graphical display option.

Of course the most important thing is to check for any current or historical errors. You can see under Current Service Codes mine reports "No failures". If there had been historical codes flagged they would be displayed by item with the number of occurrences.

Perhaps the most interesting is as well as total run time since new it divides up the time into periods spent at differing revs. In our case it pretty well indicates the typical mixed throttle openings of our outings... and the slightly useless stat that of our time running above idle 55% of it is on the plane.

There is even more historical data on other screens.

One small issue with the battery less DF20A is should it fail in a no-start condition then the fault codes can't be read as it relies of the voltage produced when running to communicate with the software.

The supplier of the leads has sent me details of the +/-ve pins on the connector to the engine so I will investigate a lead I can make myself to piggy back and provide 12v to the OB's systems when not running.

if you want scans, it will be with pleasure.
Where did you buy the plug and the software and at what price?
On an aerotec 380 it works perfectly, with a consumption 10 times less than my 2-stroke SUZUKI DT15C.

j'ai trouvé et acheté. je l'attends avec impatience.
La notice est bien pour les réparations.
j'ai le mème équipement pour ma voiture PEUGEOT, c'est excellent.

I found and bought. I can not wait to see him.
The manual is good for repairs.
I have the same equipment for my car PEUGEOT, it's excellent.

Hey Fenlander,
Great piece of kit and really good review. Useful to get data as and when rather than just at dealer service intervals. Looks like you’ve been behaving yourself with the revs etc...no hiding at print-out time!
Still miss my Suzi 20...best motor I’ve ever had.

Thanks Chipko. In truth if you are going to home service such motors properly the diagnostics are pretty essential. Yep still pleased with the Suzuki... but the new Tohatsu 20hp Efi will give it a run for its money.

Seems you found the place to buy the diagnostic kit Nevada, hope you get on with it OK. Yes I too have diagnostics for all the four family cars I look after.

Just a small thing I forgot to mention... the logged hours show that my £20 tach shows the hours slightly high... about 8% more than actual... it is spot on for revs though.

Agree the new Efi Tohatsu and Mercs look good and will be interesting to see how they perform against the Suzuki.

Interesting that 5 years after the introduction of the Suzuki these new motors haven’t really even managed to shed any appreciable weight.

Hello everyone
I'm fine with the software, the basic mechanics of the engine remains the same meme.
I am at my second aerotec, the first 13 years, and the second 7 years already.
Since the Suzuki 20 AES I added flaps as seen on this forum as well as a sonar.
The flaps have a real efficiency with the 20 cv.
From the beginning, I had added a floor mat and screw protection of the bench.
Although the weight has not dropped, the power has increased for the same weight.
I have more free time and I will do a photo report to you in the heyday of all the improvements made to my aerotec 380.
I go on the Seine in Paris since the beginning, in Corsica and Cerbere. I go scuba diving, water skiing and 40 km walks in calm weather.

I do wonder if 43/44kg is about as low as they will go with a 20hp 4-stroke? I mean with the 15hp 2-strokes they got down to 36kg and stuck at that... no lower.

Mrs Fenlander's work has been associated with military related aerospace and she has commented before she reckons they could get a 20hp down nearer 35kg... if cost for ultra high tech design/materials wasn't a consideration.

Nevada it's interesting to know you have the same outfit as mine... yes images of yours would be good when you have the opportunity.
