How much is a lot ?

if its burning oil you should notice some smoke or smell when you use it hard , running on muffs probably won't make it smoke .
make sure you are not overfilling it.
My DF 70 was easy to misread the dipstick I think its the same motor.

Just a thought-if you run it up on muffs with a sheet of paper a foot or so behind the prop are there any oil specks on it? I'm wondering if your bottom crank seal is leaking a bit.

when i use it hard, there's no smoke or smell. i only fill it to the mark, but i would say it's using about a litr an hr @ 5000 revs.

thanks, i'll try that and see if it is, but as i said, 1ltr an hr @ 5000 revs is a bit excessive.

Might be worth checking your crankcase breather isn't blocked too. If the crankcase is pressurising it could cause the same.

Thats a lot of oil . If its being burnt your plugs will look sooty or oily and the exhaust will be the same .

I would check all that Nos says and do a compression test .
Also providing the compressions are even fit a new oil filter , I have known the little valve in them to stick .

Did it start using oil suddenly , or after a service , or did it start slowly and get worse?

Time to track back then and go through what you could have done ,
when you serviced it what did the plugs look like ,
was there any soot or oil in the the exhaust
What did you service /remove refit etc .
Is it the right oil filter
Is the new filter leaking , did the old o ring come off on the old filter
Is the drain plug leaking into the water when its hot .

Hopefully you have made a small mistake somewhere and not been sold a nail
