Suzuki 25hp

Hi,
I have just bought a SIB with a 25hp short shaft two stroke Suzuki. The man I bought it of told me it was a 1997 -1998 engine, but I know this could be well off.
The engine looks fine, but I can't find any model or serial number. Can someone tell me where I would look? I fear it should be on the transom mount, because if it was, it has long since peeled off.
Also hoping someone may be able to tell me something more from some photos I took.
I'd like to know the oil mix before I use it, and possibly an age range?
I know I a masking a bit much from just a few photos, but thanks in advance for any help!

Not sure on the age though, but at a guess about right or earlier.

Thanks Nos4r2, every engine I have owned you have given me advice on, so thanks VERY much.
I know you will somehow know, but are you quite positive about the mix? It sounds right, and if you say so, I'll treat it as that from now on.

As positive as possible without having year data.
The early 80's DT25 ran 50:1 and 100:1 (the only other option) isn't really enough oil for an older engine.

Yes, around 15 years off! That motor is 1983-85

Run it on 50:1 mix.

I'd have guessed mid/early 80s too....

Taking a sellers word on the age of an outboard is often a mistake when you do not have that much knowledge on the subject. Always check with a dealer/ reliable source. They should be able to give a good idea even without the serial no.

Thanks for your help guys.
I never believe what an owner tells me about engines anymore, and it was part of a package that I wanted.
The engine is clean and very little corrosion, so as long as it runs fine I guess it doesn't really matter the age, but its nice to know.
If there is no serial or model, how will I order spares in the future?

Yes, it's stamped on a rectangular plate on the transom saddle, but the photo you posted shows it's missing.
It will also be stamped on the cylinder block, sometimes on a small circular disc - not sure exactly where on a DT25.

So it is a DT25 then. I did see a number on the block, but I thought it was a part number. I will have another look, thanks Dai.

'88 at the very youngest - it was in 89 the 3 cyl auto oiling version appeared.

Suzuki seemed to be reasonably good at not faffing about changing things randomly. Assuming you can't find the serial number, have a look here, http://store.brownspoint.com/dt25.asp if you look the PDF name has the years it covers, and they seem to go in 3ish year blocks. Now bearing in mind that's about as long as a set of livery transfers would run before the marketing bods decided it was time for a respray, it wonlt take too ling to scan through 4 or 5 PDFs to see if your particular part carries the same part number.

Going by the paint job on the cowl I'd guess it's a late 80s machine.

That hood is definately different to mine. Thanks for all you help. Believe it or not, this isn't even the most I have been misled about regards age of an engine.
Like I say though, the engine looks good for its age, and if it runs well, I will be happy.
