Small Engines

I need a small outboard for a new keelboat. Class rules dictate a minimum of 2HP and 11 Kg.

Is there a 4 stroke that gets close to this kind of weight or do I need to look at used 2 stroke engines?

no max

Stu

There is no maximum

As its a race boat (sailing) the name of the game is keeping the boat as light as possible. Class rules dictate you either carry an engine of 11kg / 2HP minimum or corrector weights of 15 kg.

I prefer the idea of the engine as not only might it save a few kilos but after racing it helps nudge you up the Itchen in light winds, besides as the boat is also used for training it needs a small engine anyway.

the class rules of course were written long before the demise of the 2 stroke and hence the minimums are not so realistic these days,

The Suzi sounds like the best new 4 stroke I have come across yet- thanks Black

And it's got a throttle lever like the choke on my grandad's old BSA Gold Star.

Evenrude / Johnson did a tiny 2Hp from about the mod 60s to around 1980-ish, around 11Kg fully fuelled. They also did a 2- pot version at 4Hp, The longshaft version being 15ish KG fuelled in it's original guise but gained a clutch in it's latter years, I guess addng another Kilo or so.

Not new, but very compact.

Have a trawl round www.old-omc.de - they have scans of the old brochures.
