I have a very shiny yam prop in the garage after I found a sandbank in the Taw.

Our first Honda prop ended up looking fairly similar after a year or so. Probably sand and grit swirling around in the surf that did it.

Interesting that you can do that all in one go, though, and without stalling the engine too.

Pretty easy to do in thin water and a sand or small gravel bottom. I suspect the blade pushes water which suspends the sand, rather than it simply whacking through the solid sand/water mix. I've run quite a ways with teh prop semi-bottoming.

Sneaking back into the Albion River yesterday during a low tide, I moved some gravel that put some small nicks in my new prop. Oh well...

Hell, I always do that. Doesn't even have to be dead low tide.

Interesting thought. Apart from not stalling the engine, it might also explain why, apart from the paint, the prop is almost undamaged.

We raced in Cardiff once, the smaller boats raced in the fresh water bit and we locked out into the sea which was 50/50 mud and water - you should have seen the props when they came out!

I spent a year working on a shallow Florida lake once with a 21ft hardboat and 175 Mariner. The stainless prop was pretty thin after that.

haha, I am glad i'm not the only one! is there any point in re-painting it? does it make any difference? i suppose it would be a tad less efficient...

I doubt efficiency would be affected (not from the paint being abraded away.) May be a bit more corrosion prone, but I've rarely seen corrosion be a problem on a prop that get used regularly (if on a mooring, that may be a different story, though your zincs should handle things.)

If the leading edge is dinged up it can become less efficient, though. If minor, just tidy things up with a file.
