An interesting read! Does anybody know if the Optimax Pro XS is/will be available through Barrus/ Marinautic? maybe the e-tec isn't as great as we thought it was!!

when i researched the difference between opti and etec i found that performance wise not much in it but economy wise the opti seemed to come out best, and by a reasonable margin in many cases. In my opinion they were putting the etec against the verado as it was an easier contest, however the optis are faster and more economical and lighter than the verado, but noisier i know but i like the noise, and in most tests in the usa the optis are more economical than the etec.

mercury are pushing the verados and downplaying the optis, even making the optis for 2006 look bland.

all good engines but i am very happy i chose opti,

and cheaper as well....

Bland!!!

Now now paul what you are looking at there is true understated class.!!!

The etecs are indeed lovelly bits of kit but the oil is £50 a 4 litre and the warranty goes down the pan as soon as you hit 300 hours or 3 years so my opti owning days will continue not least because I have done tons of hours and even chewed sand sea bed (say no more) and they never let me down.

Both good engines but I will keep buying opti until etec is well established and the public have taken them to heart.

just for the record Oakly outboards quoted only 8500 for a 175 last week and that was way better than anyone else, they did also tell me the oil details and the service situation/ in relation to hours etc
