RPM Guage

Hi,

Just wondering why the RPM guage on my 1996 Johnson 90 displays at idle an RPM of 1500 yet seems to be correct at higher RPMs. I am topping out at 5500 RPM.

The engine does not sound as though it is idling at high speed, when you drop it into gear it drops to about 1300 on the RPM guage yet the engine sounds like it idling about as slow as you would want it to.

according to the book it should be idling at about 600-700 rpm???

Are these guages not v. reliable or have I got a bad one?
