Reverse problems Mercruiser Alpha

Hi Folks ,

This is not really a RIB problem but I am sure that some one out there has advice to offer !

We recently bought a 1993 Rinker Sports boat as a fun machine . It is fitted with a Mercruiser Alpha Thunderbolt 5.7 L V8 260 HP stern drive fitted to an Alpha Leg.

The problem is that whenever we engage reverse gear the engine dies . The linkage ( examined by our local outboard mechanic ) seems fine and in fact it will rev perfectly in reverse fast idle . We didn't get a manual with it so I wondered was there some kind of reverse safety lock gizmo or some thing else hidden in there . Any ideas ????

Oh ..and we do not have a Mercruiser agent anywhere near us in this part of Ireland !

Best wishes ,

Stuart

Stuart,

There appears to be agents for Mercruiser at

Kilmacsimon Quay Cork tel 21775134
Bulloch Harbour Dublin 12800321
Sir John Rogersons Quay Dublin 16719300
Ballyvalley Bay Co Clare 6136364
Monasterevan Co Kildare 45525331

All taken from the latest service manual.

Hope this helps.

Nick

Cheers Nick !!! Very Kind of you .....

I was aware of all except the Co Clare people who are probably closest to us .

A Marine Engineer pal of mine and my self went seriously under the hood today and discovere a small micro switch linked to the gear / throttle linkage near the airfilter which cuts out the engine . The micro switch seems to be some kind of safety tp prevent you from going from fast forward to reverse.

Anyway we will check it out with mercruiser during the week .

many thanks again

Best wishes ,
