Repowering 5m rib

Hi,

Looking at Repowering a 5m rib. Most boats of this size, I've always gone for 75hp because I have used them dive boats for four divers. My question is if instead planning on using for 3 divers or 2 divers plus cox, can I get away something smaller. Main motivation is wanting to switch to more modern engine, and tohatsu 50hp at £4k looks good value, compared to 60 etec at £6k+ which would be my first choice but for the price. Anyone with experience of the proposed engine/set up I would be pleased to hear from.

Thanks

Have you given up on the divers? It's not entirely clear...

No not yet. Just few of us left diving. Most have decided that warm weather diving is the way to go! So only catering for a couple of divers these days plus cox.

Who gave you the price on the Etec? Have you tried Mike Vincent at South Coast Marine? I'd go for the 75 over the 60

Hi

Been quoted £6k for 60 and £6.5k for 75hp etec. As opposed to £4k for 50hp tohatsu. Thought the 60hp would be best fit for fuel economy over the 75hp

The 75 is worth the extra £500, it's a 3cyl as opposed to the 2cyl 60 & will be much smoother. The 75 has a reputation as a "strong" engine, also the 75 has a stronger transom bracket. Economy wont be much different, might even be better with the 75 as it won't be working as hard. Is the Twatsoo new tech (efi) or carbed? I'd shop around for more prices on the Etec.

Aye,

Tohatsu was for the new tldi engine. Interesting comment about the 75 though. Funnily I have a few 75hp second hand, and less still 60 hp's. I see tohatsu do a 75hp, but seem to out of stock at the moment.

Thanks for the advice. I'll keep looking.
